Starting Issue

I just recently bought an 88 Sahara with the 4.2L I6 and a manual transmission.

It had some problems starting when i bought it. It would only crank once and would only fire when the key was released from start back to run. I replaced the starter and now it cranks great but will still only fire up when the key is released back to run.

Is this an ICM problem? Or possibly something else?

I am not sure if this is related or possibly just normal operation. When the key is in the run (On? Not sure the terminology) position I can hear a rapid clicking sound coming from distributor.

My first thought is maybe your wiring or something else in the steering column. it is as if the ICM is not getting juice when the key is all the way forward...

If it gets juice when the key is set to "run", it (ICM) must be ok??? right???

Do you know if the previous owner had a huge set of keys dangling on there all the time? Look for signs of keys slapping around on the column. The pulling down force of them is no good for key tumblers...

just an idea...

Isn't the actual "switch" down on the column or is that just in later models. If it is it should be a black box attached to the column near the dash.....I would start there

According to the FSM the Ignition Switch should be on the column. I'll start there and work my way down the line. Thanks for the help!
