Whats goin on man... Thought Id stop in and show you something that I started yesterday that might help you out. (Ive been bored as hell waiting on UPS to deliver my headers, elect fan). Sorry if this ninjas your thread. Im also going to a aftermarket gauge set up (prob autometer) once my swap is complete and want a steel dash as well. "Great minds think alike"

Before you go spending a bunch of money, thought Id share my idea with you since you have access to tools and a welder and are fairly skilled. Im making my own steel dash and Im not even the most experienced here but with time and patience, Ill get it done.

To start, I cut out a 46"x10" piece of card board to use as my template and mounted it under my dash pad. As of now, Ive marked my holes to where I will need to drill out with a drill press.

Here are some pics to show you what I mean

I know you said you wanted to have cut outs for the heater control and radio but hey, I have faith that if you can swap a 350 in your jeep, you can cut those out as well. In my case, Im installing my radio inside of my coyboy console that will between the seats where you see my BM shifter sitting. That way, I have no electronics exposed.

Here is what Im deciding on. Once I order my gauges, Ill measure up the holes on my carboard template and then find the right piece of steal to mark and cut. Once thats all said and done, Im gonna sand it and go over it with a black finish. I think its gonna look pretty good. I think if I do this, my options are endless.

To be honest, just lookin at some of the work you've done, Id spend the weekend and make a custom dash of my own.

wow, coyote...you never fail to amaze me! that dash is pimp as hell! i dont need mine quite so incredibly sweet, with those sauce hinges to acess your gauges, top notch my friend! I almost wish you had'nt showed me that cuz now, whatever i get...i'll want what u got. if you fabbed that yourself,...gung-ho! mandngo,...hats off to you for attacking yours yourself! i cant weld my way out of a wet paper bag to be honest. gd luck fabbing yours, make sure to post a thread on how you tackled it. looks like you got a solid hold on how to go about it.
1) i dont really have any time right now to fab one
2) as stated above, i suc at welding (and i got a chitty flux core welder) mig
3) im burnt out on tackling projects (i put in countless all nighters to finish my entire build in 2 months) by myself.
Coyote- looks like no welding on yours and i have to admit...beautifull design! simple, rugged, clean lines, and practicle. hell, you should farm those out to people! i'd buy one right now..howz a $100.00 bucks sound?$150? I may as well paint my rig yellow, and call it coyotes' shadow cuz everything i've seen on yours is exactly how i'd want it for mine. chit,!!!!! i think you guys put a burr up my azz to fab one up. damnit, i just wanted to buy one. cuz i also wanted 5 gauges in my dash, the 5th to be for transmission pressure read-out (not trans heat) for running diagnostic of trans performance and spotting early, any failures before i break components. i'll use just another oil pressure gauge w/ an isolator to convert trans fluid to h20/coolant in the dash.

Ya, I fabbed it. No welding either. I thought about building a few here and there and charging $200 +/-, but I don't have access to the materials to build them like I did when I lived in Kansas. Soon I will need to add a couple more gauges and I'm not sure what to do. I have room for one more on my current setup. When I go diesel I'm really in for it cuz that'll mean 2 more gauges on top of the 2 I'll be adding soon. I just don't have room for 4 more gauges.

wow. not happy w/ the 350? diesel is killer tho...i ended up finding one on-line out of TX. has a five gauge hole set-up like i wanted/ steel/ heatr and radio cut-outs. howd your "sniff test" go w/ the stuffies over there??? (i got alot of british fam. ovr there so i can call em' that) the dash i bought cost 90 bucks. but i'd gladly pay $200.00 for yours. i dont have a break/bender either so this will have to do...

The 350's been in there since 2002 and I'm due for a change. I like the mileage the diesels provide and a diesel would kinda fit the theme of my jeep a bit better. The engine is out of a 1978 Chevelle so there was no sniffer test.

I used a break on mine but I didn't need to and later on I removed the part that goes between the windshield frame and the tub. Mine is an overlay of the original dash frame.

I imagine if you had all the tools(you don't need a break)and the supplies and 12 hours of uninterrupted time you could make a dash like mine in a day. That does not include wiring though. You know I have a write up on the "other" forum.

The write up is on the jeep forum. One of these days I'll should import that thread over here.
Custom Dash Build - JeepForum.com

As for the bend at the top I used a break but the piece I bent over has since been cut off because it isn't needed. So you'll just need a flat piece of metal 47" x 10"
