Steering gear box

Question..... I have a leak right where the pitman arm connects to the steering gear assembly. Took it to a mechanic and he said it was run upwrds of $300 for him to get a seal kit and "try" to fix the leak. He also mentioned I should just replace the whole gear box cause he couldn't guarnatee the seal kit would stop the leak??
Is this something I could do myself and is the seal kit even worth it. With the help of you guys I rebuilt the carb on my 90 YJ last year so I figured I would ask for help again!! Thanks. D

I got a new (might have been rebuilt) steering box and had it installed for about $300... So no, I don't think its worth it.

Is that part any good? I'm am not familiar with Lares. Is it worth it to just buy a seal kit and redo it myself? The gear seems to be OK it's just leaking right at the pitman arm. Can't beat that price though, just makes me cautious since it's soooo low! Help....

I actually just replaced mine about 3 weeks ago. I got a rebuilt one from Auto Zone. The total price after I turned in my core was $110. It's pretty easy to do with the help of a Haynes manual. The job took me about 2-3 hours total. I would recommend disconnecting the power steering reservoir from the hoses (I wound up breaking mine where the hoses connect.) but forget the seal kit and just do it yourself!

Try Lucas power steering stop leak first. You can also use a 98-99 Durango steering box I have been told.

Thanks for the replies, you guys are awesome! I love this site. I have had my 90 jeep since 1990 bought the Haynes book about 1995 or so and lived by it! This site has replaced the book tri-fold!! Thanks again!
