Steering issues

Hello all. Got my 88yj back from the mechanic today with some disappointing news. I asked him to tighten up the steering via the adjustment screw on the steering box. Seems to have helped a little, but the jeep is still real difficult to keep going in a straight line due to the remaining play in the wheel. He mentioned there was likely an issue in the column. I am positive it needs a high steering kit, and an alignment to really fix its issues, both are at the top of my to do list. Do I need to replace the column entirely or is there an adjustment or small parts kit that may sort it out?

FYI, what I know about it is in my jeep profile. moving it into my shop for a fact finding mission on monday. Im probably going to need a sheet of plywood to write my to do list on!

When I had a problem with my 89 I replaced the steering box, pitman arm and intermediate shaft, which included the U joints. Less likely that it's the actual steering column. Take a look at the shaft under the hood from the box to the firewall. A lot of times the u joints are bad. Steering is too important to not fix properly. Are you sure the problem isn't the front end.

Im not SURE of anything at this point! Monday will be my fact finding day, it will be the first time i really get to go through it. Any suggestions on what to check out will be greatly appreciated.

You use term "keeping it straight" to me means your caster and toe-in are off!! And if the Jeep is lifted, there's a very good chance the caster is off unless you can see an alum. wedge bewteen the axle and leaf spring.

Concentrate on those 2 those things and you'll be going straight w/o effort in no time!!

Take a look at this thread - as I had the same issue... Actually the steering box needs to come off for adjustment and just had mine done, it deff helped. I went from having 6 inches of play on each side to nearly 1" huge difference. Needless to say I'm working on adding PS so I'll junk the old part soon enough

How are your Tie Rod/Drag Link boots. I just replaced all mine with some Energy Suspension boots and it tightened up my steering a great deal.

As far as your steering column, to my knowledge unless it is physically broken at one of the joints or the input spline is damaged it doesn't effect slop. The Steering Gear box, and connective joints [ie. Ball Joints, Tie Rod Ends/boots etc.].

Update

It turns out the steering box is shot as well as the lower column bearing. I'm going to use the steering box from my xj, and the bearing kit is on the way from quadratec. Also on the way is a rocky road high steer kit. So hopefully I'll have it all sorted in a week or two. Thanks for the help. It's very much appreciated.
