stink smell

my father-in-law has same yr. jeep as i do. a 95 2.4 stock no mods what so ever. and he was driving from one side of the state to the other to his cabin. when he got there, he noted a very strong smell like as he put it...natural gas. kinda sulfer smelling. didnt investigate. now on his way home he got half way when he noticed the smell again and was losing speed in fifth. he down shifted to fourth, and continued to loose speed through all his gears. so he pulled onto the shoulder and at about 35 mph engaged his 4x4 the jeep jerked back and fourth made a loud popping sound then continued to drive, and gain speed!!!! now he went through some helli amount of gas, but was able to maintain a speed of about 65-70 mph while in 4x4. he has yet to take it out of 4x4. it has sat for 4- 6 days and still you can smell the strong odor as stated before. i have yet to make it over there to check it out, but what could it be???? he just had trans work done (new gears) but i dont know what specific gear work was done. and he had engine work done (he said a new engine but i think it was just a rebuild) i asked if it smelled like burnt gear oil maybe from his rear dif. but he said he didnt think so, plus it drives in 4x4!?! f u n k y....

this happened to me, but... i looked in the rear view mirror and saw clouds of smoke... my oil pressure sending unit was not working right. oil was leaking... causeing smoke.. and smell. your car will smell from anti-freeze or oil. best thing to do is to keep eye on oil/temp when youre driving. i say let a mechanic look at it, can be gasket. pressure unit, valve, etc.

heres a link on smoke/smell

http://www.trustmymechanic.com/troubleshoot_smoke.htm

my pressure unit cost about 271 bucks to fix, but it made a big difference in how smoothly the jeep was driving.

goodluck,
rock n roll

That's a cat, if your cheap disconnect it and knock it out with a hammer and hook it back up. If ur not but a new one. You can get universals for like $90 at advanced auto and since i worked there i know a good piece of advice for the future for everyone. Advanced Auto Parts cats are actually high flow Dynomax Cats with Walker stickers. See im good for something sometimes

Now there's an environmentally responsible answer. Trread Lightly applies to our atmosphere as well.

your exhaust was being choked off thus the loss of power, then whatever was blocking the cat blew through(the pop). have him put it back in 2wd and it should work fine. if not come back and let us know.

i checked it out the other day, it was his rear diff. shredded his ring and pin. i dont know how his dang fill plug "fell" out but its gone , his pig dried out siezed then popped. no plug to be found anywhere. the wierd smell he smelled was the gear oil. he never smelt it before. i showed up, opened his garage and said "killed your pig..."

we are in the process of replacing the axle or the guts to his dana 30. im tring to swing him into replacing the axle w/ a dana 35 at least, well a 35. perfect for him (tiny motor tiny trans, no lift, pizza cutters)4.11 gears.

i stand corrected. but I assume you mean dana 35 (dana 30 is front axle) if it is an option you should find an explorer axle for the rear and quit wasting money on the turdy-5. it likes to self destruct under any decent wheeling conditions. just my .02 cents, oh and they come stock with 4.11 gears.

its like 1/2 an inch wider i think. not enough to notice but be sure when you mount it, you measure from the brakes not the pumpkin. ford made them offset to keep the needle bearings lubed in the ujoint caps. have fun
