Strange tick / click / knock from under my YJ YJ runs on some 85.000 miles, I also hear that diesel-like knocking (vaguely for now) but as I can see, that's a normal thing on these I6 engines.

Now I hate when I hear a new sound after I get used to the first one.

Whenever I run over a pothole or climb up the hill (when my jeep gets some rattle), I can hear a small "tick-CLICK" from under my wrangler in a rapid succession (sounds almost like the sound of the front driveshaft in the video down this page). It doesn't repeat often but whenever I run over a bump or pothole - I can hear it.

Anyone experienced this before?
Any ideas?

All I found was this similar case from a guy owning a TJ automatic (my guess it is only evident on automatics?)

or this

Other than that -- is this normal behavior for front driveshaft? (video)

Sounds like your chain in your transfer case. You may have some slack.

That slipyolk does look a little loose! Might be enough to unbalance it during 4WD high use.

As for the pothole rattling, check the shock mounts. Sometimes the tab holes get wallowed out. Fix is to tighten the crap out of them, or replace.

Could also be the track bar mounts, these bars are useless if you have leaf springs.

If you do (have leaf springs), remove the track bars, & the rattling should stop.

OK, I think I localized the noise; it comes from the rear end on left behind (and under) driver's seat.

Now I know I have left rear brake drum worn out and looks corrugated from inside; it's so worn out it is not possible to work it out on metallurgic machine (way beyond the limit).

Could this be the problem? :-/
