stuck in 2nd

95 2.5 MT it's stuck in second gear wont budge. Is this a clutch issue or trany?

Even without a clutch you should still be able to slip it out of gear under engine - no load - situation. With the engine off and the gears not loaded (move the jeep back and forth to unload the gears) it should slip out of gear. If you are on a hill with the engine off and the clutch engaged (as it would be if something was wrong with the clutch) the gears will be loaded with torque from the wheels. By moving the jeep forwards or backwards this will cause the gears to move and unload at some point. That is when it should slip out of gear.

If this does happen be prepared to step on the brake if it should start rolling.

Did u try to start it with the cluch in? If is a cluch problem it will jump if its on gear. If your jeep is old enough to not have the cluch start only sencer thing

He said it is stuck in second. Only reason I can figure for that is broken clutch and gears loaded. Maybe something internal in the transmission. If he put the clutch in and it is still stuck that is because putting the clutch in should unload the gears and allow the tranny to slip out of gear.

Oh ya, clutch in it should roll if it is on a hill. I figured he would have said something if that were the case.

It stuck while driving, it wont come out while running, off, moving, stopped, clutch in or out. I am having other clutch issues and will be replacing it here soon. I'm hoping its clutch related. I don't know much about manual transmissions other then driving them.

Are you saying that you can't get it out of gear even rocking it back and forth engine off?

Mmmmman that doesn't sound good. Points to transmission if you ask me. That is the bad news. The good news is that AX5 transmissions are plentiful out there. I got one off of Craig's List for $150.00 (I think) that included the transfer case and some other miscellaneous 4 banger parts and it has worked like a new transmission. It was from a 2000 tj and bolted right up without any modifications.

Other issues I've been having with it is hard going into first occasionally grinding going into 2nd and reverse and sometimes while in neutral with the clutch out the driveshaft will shake like its trying to turn. It didn't do all of these things all the time but most. I replaced the master and slave cylinders( MC was leaking and SC came out in pieces) after that it got better but still doing all the same stuff. It also seemed to work better when the trany was cold as soon as it would warm up it would get worse. The clutch never slipped or anything like that.

After reading a few threads I came across one that mentions a shifter problem could be causing the stuck in gear problem.

Just pulled the shifter out lots of gold flexes in the fluid now so my synchros are trashed I guess I will look into having it rebuilt or finding one to replace it but there's not one listed in Kansas on Craig's list, not surprised can't find crap for Jeeps in Kansas.

My 92 was having problems shifting into 3rd. I had just done a clutch on it that turned into a replace the seals job as just about every seal was leaking. I discovered that the top shifter dust boot was cracked allowing all kinds of road dirt and sand in from the top. The oil was like the color of mud. Most likely the cause of the third gear synchro being messed up. Anyway, thought I'd mention about the seals and the boot because if these are not looked after and road grime gets in it is likely to cause premature failure of the transmission.

Same thing happened to my jeep!! It would be stuck in 2nd and the only way I could get it out was by driving it! I would just drive down the block and it would pop out 2nd! But then sometimes it would get stuck in 4th when I would drive it!! A couple weeks later me gear box went out!! But I've had synchro problems since I bought my 95 yj I just swapped the tranny out and haven't had a problem yet!! Got a new one for 125

Swap done yet? How did it come out. Bell housing looks freshly painted - how did you do that?

Its not done yet stupid parts store gave me the wrong out put seal for the tranny and haven't been able to get out to the garage to get it finished. The bell housing I just cleaned really good and painted it with engine paint before I installed it.

That's the first time I've used my home made tranny plate for my floor jack and I didn't use it to drop the trans and t case I ran a winch through the floor of the jeep(works great with my pit) and able to do it by myself. Hopefully I will get out to work on it today.

Unless you can lift the jeep up high enough, the floor jack is going to be a PIA. My tranny barely fit under without the gear shift in place. The transfer case shifter without knob on it was in place when I put it in. Not an inch to spare with the jeep up on jack stands on all four wheels. You have a pit though so maybe it will go in the same way it came out?

Its going in the same way it came out, with the winch it worked so well coming out I hope it goes back in that easy. The bell housing just barely fit under the frame when I slid it out without the jack

Well its done it drove and shifted fine but I can hear the gears in the trans is this cause I took the carpet out or that I put 3 1/2 quarts or 10w 30 in it instead of gear oil? I mean it very noticeable
