Stupid Driveshaft Questions

i just recieved my 1995 YJ 2.5 5 speed it was a repo that I bought sight unseen. It was missing both drive shafts, it has stock springs , spring over axle and stock shackles.
#1 Will stock length driveshafts work?

#2 On the front shaft does the slip end go on the top (transfer case) or the bottom (Differential side)

Any input would be appreciated.

#1 No with spring over the axle you need custom rear drive shaft.

#2 slip goes closest the front axle.

Looks like a trip to the driveshaft shop, will the front be OK?

Not sure on that one. I haven't honestly heard of many ppl that change it out. Maybe someone will chime in or go ahead and search SOA and ask someone that has SOA what the did. I have a 4" lift with stock driveshafts but most of the time ppl suggest the SYE for the transfer case.

The stock front shaft will work just fine....
Hopefully you already have a SYE kit in stalled in the TC....that way you'll just need your local DS shop to make one up for you...

No doesnt have a SYE installed just a splined shaft sticking out of the transfer case.
I am not planning on a lot of serious suspension travel just some mud puddles. Just trying to get this thing somewhat functional.http://s450.photobucket.com/user/54G...38303122785265

In response to allmudd's comment. I have a SOA and SYE. With the SOA you get about 5.5" of lift on stock springs and the SYE is pretty much required. They say max lift to avoid SYE is 4" and even then you should install a t-case lowering kit. My guess is the reason it didn't have driveshafts is because someone didn't finish the project, they were probably going to install a SYE then have the new shaft made.

I would have thought that but by the way the underside of the truck looks it has been out in the mud a bunch since the soa .It also appears they have dropped the skid plate about an inch and all 4 springs appear to be sagging.

I am going to go out on a limb and say they had stock drive shafts and blew them out on the trail because they did not do the slip yoke eliminator.

Can you post a pic of the shaft? and the rear tail housing we will know for sure from that.

Also look for any damage! If I am wrong and I hope I am then you may just need a custom rear drive shaft to get it on the road so to speak.

Cant post pics of the driveshafts they are mia,no apparent damage to the transfer case. just got replacement shafts today both front anf rear fit perfect and have plenty of travel.Will update after I get the thing on the road.

If you dont know Jeeps, you need to have someone who does go over it in detail. Or post a ton of pics of steering, springs, trans, TC, skid plate, basically everything. X2 on this sounding like an unfinished project. If you drive it after just throwing driveshafts in it that could be the end of you and the Jeep. I would at least expect you get driveshafts cut to cusomte lengths, need to change stuff to make it work and then need them re-cut.

Apparently the PO didnt get the rear u-joint in the saddle correctly with one cup on the tab and oner inside the tab so when the driveshaft let loose it damaged the rear yoke and bent the rear output shaft slightly ruining the extension housing. I mocked it up w/o the housing and the shaft is the correct length and ujoint angles are near perfect.So now I need a new output shaft and a rear yoke. I really do not want to spend the money on a sye because this jeep will not see extreme off road use.

Sye is for correct angles, not extreme Offroad use. It is only because people are lifted they have them, but because they are offroading. If your angles aren't good the vibes will destroy other components over time and cost you way more than the sye. Eliminating vibes is the key. If you need an sye to do that then you need an sye to do that.

If they were running stock shafts I would bet anything the horrible angles caused the ujoints to fail, and it probably vibrated like a giant dildo rolling down the road.

I will bet the failure was due to improper installation of the rear u-joint in the yoke, the cups were still in the yoke but the rest of the joint and shaft were mia.One cup was in its proper place but the other was on the lip, both the cups ,ubolts and the yoke were badly mangled. I dont know if I will have bad vibes till I fix the problems I know I have.There is another member of this forum who has a sticky on soa's who says he has done a ton of them and has never had to go with a sye or a CV shaft.I will say that I would like to see the driveshaft to be about 1.5" longer to make the seal ride in its normal place on the yoke but that is all I think I MAY need. What bI doo need now is a replacement yoke for the rear and a replacement output shaft for the t-case. Cheap?

Mowrangler- you need the rear yoke for the dana 35? And the output shaft for the TC?

I know Ibuildembig does not use SYE kits. 99% of everyone else does. It reduces the angle. Less angle = less stress. Stress causes failures. I also think he usually drops the TC an inch or two. You would have to ask him though.

Overkill my Transfer case has been dropprd about 1.75" and the driveshaft angles look near stock as compared to a friends YJ I just looked at. His has not been lifted or modified my driveshaft couldnt be more than a degree or so different. Once I replace the yoke and the output shafr I will probably have to have the shaft lengthened ahout 1.5-2.0 inches to insure proper travel.

When you measure to have it lengthened make sure you measure from the yoke center with the slip into where the wear Mark is on it. If you are dropped 1.75" you will be fine. You are equal to about 3.75" lift on your driveline.

my yj is soa with stock driveshaft and no vibration.transfer case is dropped 1 1/4 inches.I would like for the driveshaft to be about an inch longer but it does not get extreme 4 wheeling..I have put about 10,000 miles on it in the last year with no problems

Thanks Overkill that is just about what I estamate where I will be. Next step is to replace damaged yoke and output shaft then mesure and have driveshaft legthened.
I have located a yoke but I still need a tc output shaft. Thanks everyone for your input I have been working on cars for 42 years but this is not an area that I work on often . Thanks

harleydragon sounds like you and I are in similsr situations I am going to put this thing back together and see what I have. The only difference is my po was an idiot and couldnt put in a driveshaft correctly. This YJ will see some mud puddles ,some sand and a few slippery boat ramps no extreme use and very little high speed use.Heck I dont put 5K a year on my daily driver. Thanks for your help.

I got a tc mainshaft. Give me what you think it's worth and cover shopping and its yours.
