Hello fellow jeepers,

My shocks are in need of replacement soon, so I wanted to check with everyone before I buy anything. I dont need anything fancy, just something cheap and reliable as my Jeep is a second car and is not even used for offroading. I figure I'll replace all 4 shocks and the front stabilizer at the same time. I remember when I got a muffler put on at Midas a while back, they quoted me about $400 for 4 shocks installed. What should I expect to pay?

Also, my leaf springs (at least I think that's what the flat metal strap-looking things are called) need replaced as they're a bit rusty now. What should I expect for 4 of those too?

Note, I will need a shop to install everything.

I payed $450 for my 4in rough country lift and was quoted between 450-500 by three different shops.

What all did that include? Ie labor, shocks, leaf springs, stabilizer, etc

The kit includes shocks, leaf springs, T-case drop, pitman arm drop and a few other things.

That seems like a reasonable price. What do you think labor would cost for all that (not sure if I'd need the t-case drop and arm drop?)?

If you go with the 4in lift you will need those parts. With a 2.5 in lift you might not have to. I was quoted between 450-500 for the install. So between the lift and install, your looking at 900-1000 $$$. If its not your daily driver, I recommend installing the lift yourself. It's pretty simple.

I don't have a lift now nor do I really want one if it's going to cost more. I just need the basics now. My jeep is my DD in the winter only but I can't do the install as I live in an apt complex and they don't allow working on vehicles.

You probably don't need springs, Certainly not just because they have surface rust. See if any is pitting into the springs. There should be pads between the leaves at the ends. Are they there? Measure the height to the bottom of the differential. Should be 9". Then measure to the bottom of the tub under the drivers door. Should be 18". If that is it, then the springs aren't sagging and shouldn't need replacing.

Check the shocks to see if they are leaking. There is a hydrulic fluid inside the shocks that give them their dampening action. If that is not leaking out, then it is highly likely that they do not need replacing. Same with the steering dampener.

If you have the tools/knowhow you can take the shocks loose and see if they have resistance to compression and expansion. Is so, then they don't need replacement.

The cost of replacement will depend on rust. If you live in the rust belt and they are all rusted, it will cost more.

Ok thanks for all the input everyone. The springs may not need replaced, but they look horrible lol. Based off what im learning here, Ill have to look closer at a few things though. I do know the dampener was leaking a little bit in the fall. Not sure about the shocks though, but there is some surface rust showing on them (I'll try an post some pics of everything soon). When I was at Midas shop a few months ago I was told my rear shocks needed replaced or I'd start wearing out tires quicker. Not sure how truthful they were but that's what I was told.

Do a search on Ebay for YJ shocks, and get some that have 0" lift or "stock". I just bought some for another Jeep I have for my son, and I paid $145.00 Shipping and all. You should be able to get them installed for about $100.00 or so. It takes about 1.5 hrs if someone takes their your time.

Rubicon Express has an SOA lift kit that runs just over 300 and then shocks for that lift for $200-210 thru quadratec. Install prices are gonna differ from shop to shop but that should retain ride quality because it keeps the stock springs. Just a thought but it may be worth a look in to.

Yeah and included shipping. I got them in about 5 days, and they wirk great. they are "fat bons garage" brand which i think would be like the "rough country" shocks which appear to be a generic shock. they so the job just fine

I have 4 Rough country shocks for a stock yj. They have less than 500 miles on them.
$75 plus shipping and they are yours.... Pm me if you want.

Replacing

Baring a rust issue, the shocks are easy to replace. If they have rust, as indicated, then you would need to soak with PB Blaster, or Liquid Wrench.

Even if you are going to have a shop replace them, you want to soak them to make it easier for the shop.

Shocks are probably one of the easiest things for the Owner to do.

I agree that you could proabably pull this repair off yourself.

It is generally a straight forward job. The parts are available all over the place. Any autoparts store should be able to get you stock shocks or find them online. As far as the job goes remove the old and install the new. You are talking abour Eight bolts, no special tools just some basic wrenchs and of course since you own a Jeep PB Blaster. Spray the bolts a couple of times in the days leading up to the repair and it should be relatively easy.

You own a Jeep take pride in doing it yourself!

A friend with a driveway or friendly business that would let you borrow their parking lot for a hour or two is the only thing that you really need to track down.

Do they have a lift and any pics? Approx how much would shipping be to OH?

I saw the Rough Country 4" in lift kit on EBay which supposedly has everything I'd need for $450. I'm starting to wonder if I should just bite the bullet and lift this thing now? I wouldn't be able to get wheels/tires for a while so it might look funny with my stock 225/75/15's I have on it now though.

What to do what to do?

They are just shocks. 0-2" lift IIRC. If your gonna buy a lift kit then it will come with shocks.

Shipping to OH ? Whats your zip?

Look on craigslist for tires. Best place anymore.

Rough Country

I don't have any personal experience but have read posts suggesting buying the 4" RC lift but specifying the 2.5" springs. I know you get more parts for the same price. I guess you have to call to make the arrangement though.

Ok didn't realize it was that simple. So I don't have to jack up the Jeep, I can leave it on the ground when I do it? Also I see some of the shocks online say "shock boots not included." this may be a dumb question but what are those, and will I need them?

Shock boots are rubber or plastic (usually decoratively colored) which go over the shiny metal part of the shock. Basically just protects it from the elements and rusting. Shouldn't need it. If you do much sand driving, it is recommended not to use the boot as it will trap sand and cause premature wear and eventual shock failure. Also, some kits offer nitro shocks (like my BDS kit) I am told the nitro shocks for leaf springs is a waste of money, but have no personal knowledge... Just get the basic hydraulic.

Yes please send pics. Will I need any other parts aside from these? Also, will I need to lift the jeep with a jack to swap them out with my old shocks?

The shocks will bolt right up in place of the old ones. You might need to jack it up if you can't get under it in the back. You can leave it on the ground if you wish. I'll get some pics up soon.

I know this is an older post, but I am faced with the same situation of replacing my shocks and stabilizer on my YJ. I am a new owner and have not worked on this jeep yet. Is there anywhere I can get a quick write up or explanation on how to DIY replacing these parts in my garage? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Getu1, if you have to ask how to replace shocks I would recommend taking the Jeep to a shop to do it, or find someone you know or meet on here that is local to help you. You could also try google and search for YJ shock install
Changing shocks can be done with basic tools, and shouldn't take more than 1 hour
