Swag bar links?

I have a rattle coming from the front end or my '87 4.2L YJ, happens at normal driving and is inconsistent it doesn't seem to be brake, gas or clutch pedal related as it will happen regardless what pedal depressing or none.
I have looked at the shocks and such and nothing seems loose except the rubber on the sway bar connecting links are old and do rattle round.
Also noticed that the steering shaft has a small amount of play (1/8 inch).
Think this is the problem?
should I fix? or is it ok to drive for now
Thanks

Well usually worn sway bar end links clunk or rattle when one wheel hits a bumps or on a turn when the body roll is present. If you hear it all the time I would have to think that it wouldn't be your problem. Not to say they don't need to be replaced if the bushing are worn, cracked or appear to be loose. But I would keep looking.

I think you are right, it is rattling over bumps like you described.
I'm gonna replace the links first.

Your steering has play in it because you might have to change all your ball joints or steering damper. the ball joints might be blown out. i changed mine and the play in my steering went away.
