SYE: Needed or Not Needed?

I am hoping someone can enlighten me about how SYE's work. I have seen a lot of posts on here about which lift people should buy and what all they will need to go with the lift, and it never fails, one person will say they had to have the SYE right away with their 4" lift, and the next person says their lift works fine without the SYE. Is every Jeep different? Do some need them and some don't? Is there a certain height (2", 3", 4") where you definitely HAVE to install a SYE? I am looking at putting a 2.5" suspension lift on my YJ with factory shackles and NO body lift. Will I need a SYE? Or will I have to install, drive, and check for vibrations first? I would much rather lower the t-case than install a SYE. Should I look for something lower than 2.5" to avoid the SYE? Sorry about all the questions. It is very hard to find definitive answers. Thank you for any and all comments and advice!

Yes each Jeep is different, but..

For a standard most say anything over 3.5inch lift will need a SYE kit.

You should be just fine with 2.5 inches of lift

Thanks Jeep Geek. Should I still do a T-case drop with a 2.5"? How about a drop pitman arm? I noticed some 2.5" kits come with these things and some don't. Brake line extenders are another thing that some have and some don't. Very confusing. Ugh!!

The t-case drop may or may not be needed. I'd suggest a test drive to see if there are any vibes from the driveshaft after the lift. If there are, then it's probably necessary.

Thanks AzTJ. From what I've seen, it looks like a T-case drop would be fairly easy to make on my own. Has anyone ever done this? Is it possible?

Not wantin' to hijack nobodies thread, but don't wanna' beat dead horse neither:

What he said but replace 2.5" with 4" and automatic trans. Gonna' need the SYE?

I agree; a t-case drop is just a hunk of washers. I'd considered ordering a little piece of poly tubing to go in there but it might squeek. Last thing I need is a new squeek...

I can only tell you that after my 4" lift on my YJ, I did not run a SYE, the vibrations were getting bad and then I tore up my drive shaft etc. I put a SYE on and custom drive shaft and the differance has been amazing.
Will you have the same needs? cannot tell you, but after my expierence I strongly reccomend it!

Lando - I just put a 2.5 RC lift on mine. Dude at RC told me to drive it first and see if I needed a t-case drop kit. Sure enough, it vibrates around 40 mph, so I'll be putting one on here soon. I might put the washers on but I like the looks of the Skyjacker's drop kit. It's $45 though.
My brake lines didn't need extended. I'm sure it's different for every Jeep though. Just get the basics and see if you need the other stuff if you're on a budget for it.

Thanks Mike. The 2.5" RC was the one I was looking at. Have you had any steering problems? Do you think you are going to need a drop pitman arm? Has there been any other extra expenses? And oh yeah, what shocks did you order? Do you like them? Sorry about all the questions. I am on somewhat of a tight budget so I'm trying to get a round about final price. Thanks!

Shinysideup: If you are like me, you are trying to avoid the extra cost and work of the SYE. If ashvilleyjmike is getting vibrations at 40 mph with a 2.5" lift, I would have to guess that a 4" lift is gonna get the same or worse vibrations. (But who knows, maybe you are one of those lucky ones that has the super YJ and won't need one) I would say, if you're gonna go with the 4" lift, add the SYE into your budget. My YJ is my daily driver. I didn't want to put a 4" kit on, then start driving and realize my jeep is undriveable until I spend another $300-$400. If I can, I'm gonna stick with the 2.5". Got my fingers crossed.

Lando - actually my steering has improved because I ordered the RC steering stabilizer and it's better than the stock one I had. The guy who installed my lift (Tire Station, Asheville NC) said I did'nt need a drop pitman arm on it. The shocks I got were the standard ones from RC. Mine's a daily driver for now too, so I went with the 2.5 lift. Call the guys at RC and they can recommend your setup to start with.

Oh, forgot to mention...when my lift was put on the trac bar wasn't long enough to bolt back in. He had to cut it and weld an extension-sleeve thing on it....ugly but works.

You might want to buy an adjustable trac bar. But hey, that was on my '92 so not sure about yours.

Mike, I can only confirm what you quoted. Trac bar to short: I actually made me a little brackt out of 1/2" steel and I fab a transfer case drop right now.

no matter what lift after doing my sye and drive shaft ill have to say if your lifting install an sye kit. it takes out the "slip" yoke and makes it a solid mount. instead the slip is in the drive shaft. you get the ground clearance you want by not adding in a tcase drop. and you keep proper drive line angles. if you have never messed with a tcase before but have a pretty good automotive background you could install one your self.

I just don't have the budget for an SYE. If I absolutely had to install one, I would just pass on the lift all together.

Mike: I just replaced my front track bar last week and unfortunately it isn't adjustable. Hopefully I could either buy or fab a relocation bracket. Do you know if he had to cut and lengthen your rear track bar also?

DO NOT PUT A DROP PITMAN ON. It will make things much worse. To the tc drop you are 99 percent not going to need it. Your not going to need a SYE either. I didn't even need the SYE for the 4in lift I added. I had a tc drop tho. I went to a Super short SYE for the matter of dana 44 rear and just being sure I was not going to jam the driveshaft threw the tc or drop it of the tc when flexed out.

Lando - the rear track bar was left as is...no lengthening or anything. Most people remove both of them when lifting, but I left mine on as it's a daily driver for now and I want the good handling on road.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. These pot holes in Ohio would eat my Jeep alive without the track bars. Thanks for all the info. I have a much better idea of what I will need to do and what I will need to fork out cash for. The 2.5" kit will hopefully be going on by spring.

That should help with questions about your slip yoke and what the eliminator does. Yeah, it's more money, but my feeling on it was worth saving up for just because you just spent the money on a lift, why band-aid it with a T-case drop and loose what you just gained? With 3.5" of lift in my 94 YJ I ended up with some vibes especially when downshifting, as well as my u-joints just being angry and making lots of noise, so I went with an SYE. You also solidify your drivetrain as well. The vibrations are not the sole reason to consider an SYE. You won't accidentally dump all your fluid out of your transfer case. I had a friend pop a u-joint and end up with rags stuffed in the back of his transfer case to limp it home in front wheel drive which would not be a problem with an SYE because you seal up your transfer case and don't rub dirt in it. Even if you drive your jeep regularly the unused part of your slip yoke can rust and then when you load it up with gear or people and flex your suspension fully that slightly rusted section can slide in and out and rip on that seal to it.

That said, every jeep is different. I waited until after I lifted mine to see whether or not I needed one but am an advocate for them.

Here's the deal, you may not NEED a SYE kit for your lift. You WILL break U-Joints if you don't get one. Got it? You may be able to deal with the slight vibrations from your driveline being off center, but your drive shaft will eventually win the battle over the dreaded u-joint. Why wait till it breaks? It is broke, fix it.
