SYE yoke problem/bad machining?

I bought my SYE many years ago when they had the longer style NP205 yoke. At first i tried to run a regular non CV CJ7 driveshaft i had laying around but it did not work. For whatever reason (i think it was because of the CJ7 driveshaft) i clearanced the yoke very crudely with a angle grinder to allow the driveshaft do drop down a bit more without contacting the yoke.

Well it ended up developing 2 hairline cracks and i dont trust it so i am going to replace it. I was looking up NP205 yokes and the Neapco N2-4-5341 seemed to give a tad more clearance than the no name probably chinese manufactured yokes that ship with the SYE kits. example....

Neapco

vs the JB Conversions yoke on the right

From the pictures the Neapco looks like it has more clearance to allow the driveshaft to hang lower without binding. So I ordered a Neapco thinking this would be the best yoke to solve my problem. But it came today and where the bolt goes in there is no room for the head of the bolt to tighten because they did not machine away enough metal to allow for it.

I called Neapco and talked to a guy and he said it was probably a broken tool and to send it back. But i am worried if i reorder it i will get the same thing that's defective and not going to work because the bolt will not properly tighten. What do you think?

Picture of the Neapco yoke i colored it in with a sharpie i am pretty sure that is supposed to be machined flat because my bolt wont sit flat on it.

Looks like the machining wasn't done very well. Burrs are left over from machining anything, but usually they are removed by either chemical baths, abrasive shots, or filing/sanding.

I'd either send it back or file down the burrs. Depends on your time. The safe bet is to send it back but if you need more time, take a file to it.

Well, i started wondering if i could even get a socket or closed end wrench on the head of the bolt and i cant. This Yoke is all kinds of screwed up, you don't suppose they expect you to use a allen socket cap bolt do you?

The bolts are 1/4" standard thread with 1/2" head.

I just now noticed on the Neapco stock image how deep the area machined into it for a socket is. It goes almost into the surface the seal rides on mine is not nearly that deep this is why i am having the problem.

And the yoke i am having problems with is not machined that far into the body of the yoke.

Great find! I would definitely send it back, while keeping in mind that sometimes they'll use "representative" images for similar parts, or outdated prototypes they've made.

So we are talking the same part... What is this bolt threading into? Keep in mind that I use an 8mm (5/16") 12 point wrench while you need a 13mm (1/2") wrench. That's quite a difference. Even the hex bolts for this application are 5/16" or 8mm.

It threads into the CV end of the driveshaft here is an example..

I've got the same setup, just different sized bolts. Let us know what happens when you send it back. I'd inquire about the difference in the photo compared to your unit. Give them a call and see if they can address that.

Who made your SYE? was it a hack and tap?

Advance Adapters.

But the bolts I'm talking about came with the driveshaft. The SYE only had the yoke with straight holes drilled through. I emailed them, asking how it would attach to the driveshaft. They said that the driveshaft, wherever I ordered if from, comes with the hardware to attach it.

Have you tried grade 8 allen head bolts?

Good Luck, L.M.
Not sure if my hardware store sells 12 point bolts and im not sure those would even fit, the poor machining did not leave much room for a bolt head. I am not even 100% sure if a allen bolt would work and i would like to be able to get them out 5+ years from now. finditparts.com expects me to ship it back on my dime and charge me a 20% restock fee and i doubt they will refund the shipping i paid on it. So i am assuming i will be getting about $36 refund for a part i paid $70 for.... Not happy

The 12 points would be about the same dia as the threaded part with a built in shoulder. McMaster Carr is a great source for stuff like that or possibly a good auto parts store also. sounds like it would be your best bet

Well finditparts.com were very nice and emaild me a return label and said they would issue a full refund. Now i have to decide on where to buy a yoke from next, the spicer part has been discontinued. So i either have to try another JB conversions yoke and hope it has enough clearance or buy another Neapco from somewhere like Dennys Driveshaft and hope that the yoke they have got machined properly.
