Tail light trouble!

Hey guys/gals.

Problem I'm stumped on.

Got pulled over by the man for tail light FUBAR. Any suggestions would be great.

Problem(s)

The light above the spare is in operative.
The right tail light (when viewed from the rear) constantly illuminates the white reverse gear, top indication.
Since I have none friends-I cannot determine if the light above the spare/right tail light become active during a breaking situation.

Things I've done

Re wired the Right tail light (the Previous owner cut the wires for some reason and capped them) in the correct order-according to my Jeep bible.
Changed bulbs
Checked for grounding problems
Scratched my head
When I had my transmission rebuilt I noticed that the "reverse gear light indicator" (from what I learned here) was just flopping in the wind. Properly grounded it and still no help.

That's it in a nutshell-Any help would be appreciated.
thanks /wf/
Cam Hensley.

open your tail gate. on the end of the gate on the hinge end, there are two steel "button" looking contacts. there are two on the tub also. these are how the power gets to the third light. the power comes from the right brake light. you will probably fix two gripes at once when the right light is fixed. is it on all the time or only when light switch is in on position? to check lights back up to a store with big front windows. test all lights and watch the reflections.

I cleaned up the tail gate contacts, still looking for the ones on the tub. The tail gate ones get a weak signal.

On the right light, it illuminates the reverse indication when the lights are switched on.

there has to be a wire reversed to light up the wrong bulb. when you go to reverse does the red light up? the ones on the tub are right there where the tailgate ones are. i'll go out and get a pic to send you. the top pic is the tub, the two verticle button affairs are the electrical connections that provide power th the third brake light. the bottom pic shows the two contacts on the tailgate. they are on the end of the black cover seen in the top pic. the purple thing in the background is my neighbors yuk, ford and the blue thing is my seattle seahawks tee shirt.

Well no wonder I couldn't find the ones on the tub, they were missing and covered with carpet. I have none idea why this came to be. Found new ones and now the 3rd light works.

As you guessed, the wires were swapped for the right tail light (by me, according to the book) I then configured them in the order in which I found them and they worked perfectly....until I switched on the rocker switch inside the cock pit and now the left tail lite will not work...which is why I configured them according to the jeep bible in the first place.

I am thinking a relay in the cabin might be stuck. As Wile e coyote would say..."Back to the drawing board"

i don't think a relay is the prob. your getting power there. not to the right place. the right would not work at all if no power was available to the left side. right side power comes from the left side. but, they have separate grounds.
