I've been looking into this all night, but I can't find a definitive answer so I don't want to say yes or no at this point. My thinking is that there must be come difference or they wouldn't sell them as different years of compatibility, but that doesn't mean that it's not something you can get around. I've read that the hinge holes were 1/2 inch off and another person said that it was just the latch position. I'll keep looking and when I can actually give you an honest answer, I'll let ya know what I find, unless of course someone has actually accomplished this feat and chimes in with details.

Ricola have you checked your local area Craigslist for someone parting out a YJ at all? I've found it to be a pretty good resource for used parts.

Hope to be able to give ya info. I'll be sure to let ya know ASAP.

No problem!!! Can I ask where you are from (only city and state)? It might help me in my searching to find you what you need. Oh, and how much are you wanting to spend (what's cheap)?

Try www.car-part.com. It is a site for all the junk yards. You can find your tailgate near you.

Ricola....I'm sorry bud, I can't find an answer that will say/prove that it will work correctly or what modification it would take to make it work correctly for that matter. I think JEEP C4PMPER's suggestion may be your best lead, if you don't want to E-bay it.
