Tailgate Stuck

Hello All,

So over the past couple week's my door locks have been seizing up and not allowing me to unlock them from the outside and on more than one occasion have had to hop in through the tailgate. So I do not lock it anymore. But today for some reason on a trip back from the home depot with my "trunk" filled to the brim I decided to lock the tailgate and when I went to open it nothing. I can move the key side to side but it does not engage the latch and is stuck closed.

Anybody know how I can go about unlocking it. It s a 92 yj.

Thanks in advance.

Sometimes with my TJ's tailgate I have to push in as I pull the handle. Same with the doors. The lock mechanism inside doesn't catch and a good thump or push on the door while unlocking it works.

thats bad man. is there any resistance when you turn the key or is it VERY loose? ive stopped locking my jeep all together for a similar reason, i am guessing that the lil plastic clip that connects the lock cylinder to the lock rod broke. if thats the case i hate to say it but im almost 100 % certain u have to cut the case open that houses the latch and locking mechanism.

that plastic clip is $7.60 from chrysler, maybe someone knows where to get it cheaper, but i dont. sorry if this is the case

I had mine apart a few weeks ago, the linkage was full of desert dust and would not work, I took off the small panel on the inside of the tailgate and lubes it, don't know if you can get to all the screws with it closed. You might have to remove the hinges at this point.

My doors stopped working as well so i had to take the panels off and WD40 them, i dont lock my tailgate just incase i need to get in through it but on the one door the key would turn but nothing would happen so you might just need to lube it up

This is advice for you doors only not tailgate. Buy graphite spray lube, not silicon, not oily, not PB.

For doors suck it up and remove the inside panels including speakers. It's not as bad as it sounds. Just remember where everything goes. Then you will see everything and how it relates--play with it. I don't know the names of any moving door parts. This way you can eyeball what part is not working. I've done this before and didn't need to buy anything. I had to straighten a rod with a pliers, and spray the crap out of "tired" parts...including lock cylinders, arms, etc. You need a weekend afternoon. Not difficult just some hours on the clock.
