Taillight housing / licence plate interferance

Hi all. New guy with a question. I have a '90 YJ.

My gas cap is behind my license plate

my license plate is directly under my driver side taillight housing

when i put fuel in the beast, the upward pressure of the hinged license plate pushes the fuel nozzle into the bottom of the taillight housing. Mine was cracked and broken when i got it, and is worse after every fuel up.

Even when i hold the plate down as i fuel, the nozzle gets stuck between the plate and the housing. (Just the angle i need to put the nozzle into the gas hole forces the nozzle handle into the housing)

OK, after all that.. my question is...should i look to replace my taillights with something bombproof, or is there another solution (Plasma cutting tools frowned upon).

Thanks for any and all questions/comments/concerns!

Dang that sounds like a strong license plate spring haha. Mine doesnt push up that hard. You can always relocate the gas filler to the side like a tj. Or you could relocate the license plate bracket elsewhere. Or your could get make an arm on the license plate bracket to hold it all the way down while your pumping.

She's great when she gets down in low range, hard to control when she gets going, and always in need of my money. But she's a jeep and that's why I love her.
Plus, she has nice headlights..

I use my gas cap to hold the plate down and out of the way, on the left side. It kind of has a place to do so.

Thanks for the input. Those are all great ideas. Now that I think about it, they do have the license plate brackets that attach to your spare tire arm, maybe thats the way to go. Thanks all!
