Temp sensor

Does the temp sensor in a 89 jeep wrangler inline 6 play a vital roll or just temp status for my peace of mind? Does it regulate engine temp or is that only done by the radiator thermostat?

Not 100% sure on the older ones, but in the 1991+ models, the one in the cylinder head is only for the temp gauge. The one in the thermostat housing is used by the computer for various calculations.
