Temperature Sending Unit

I recently purchased a 1994 YJ with the 2.5l 4 banger and fuel injection. The water temperature gauge does not work. The Haynes Repair manual I have says the sending unit should be located on the rear of the head on the driver's side. It also shows the heater hoese routed through the intake manifold.

I have searched for the sending unit on the rear of the cylinder head and it is not there. I do have what looks to be a sending unit in the thermostat housing. The connector there has two pins instead of the one pin units that are sold as replacements. The heater hoses run from the water pump and thermostat housing to the heater core, not the intake manifold. This is beginning to make me wonder if I have the year specific motor in this Wrangler. Does anyone have an easy way top check this? Motor block numbers or serial numbers?

The temp gauge unit is at the rear of the head on the driver's side, its small and tucked in there pretty good. Its tucked right up close to the valve cover, next to the last valve cover bolt on the driver's side, right behind the injection rail, it may have a blue connector on it. The one near the thermostat is the temp sensor. If you can't find it, look for a disconnected wire dangling near the firewall, maybe is just disconnected.

I also can not find temp sending unit. I have looked and looked. Could it be behind exhaust manifold? Or maybe this Jeep I just bought has a different year than 1994 2.5L.

i have a 93 2.5L. my gauge didnt work so the guy i bought it from rigged a dummy gauge that just measured the air temp about the engine. and obviously this only worked when your sitting for a decent amount of time. not enough for me. so i went and did some research. i found the temp sending unit on the VERY back of the engine on the driver side. inbetween the fuel rail and the valve cover on the head just above where the intake manifold meets the block. its VERY small and has a one-wire conector plugging into it. i think my wire was purple or something of the sort. i took just a regular peice of wire (speaker wire of me) and connected it to the negative battery terminal (keys off btw) and shoved the other end of the wire inside the coupler for the temp sending unit. get in the jeep and turn the to run position. if the gauge pegs then it is your sending unit. if not then try putting the wire back into the coupler again (hard to get it to hit the small metal conectors) and try it again. if this definantly doesnt work, take your gauges off and clean the connections. i found a write up on cleaning them on a nother forum that i cant recall at the moment. or its your wiring. 7/10 times its going to be the sending unit. hope this helps
