Time for a new tranny

Ok, mine is busted up real good and I have to get a new tranny... I have a 94 4.0 i6. Ax-15... Now should i go used or rebuilt?? After some research I can get the following..

$750 - rebuilt ranny with 12 month warranty.
$600 - used tranny ... no warranty, no history..
$700 - used 92 trail cherokee with 187k miles but the trans was supposedly rebuilt 10,000 miles ago.. although no paperwork or receipts.

Just trying to see what direction to head off into..
Any input would be awesome..

Thanks

Who or where are you getting the rebuilt trans from? If from a reputable company I would go rebuilt. And that's coming from someone in the used parts business.

The Cherokee has the transfer case clocked differently from the yj I believe. I would keep checking CL. I bought a used Nv3550 for 300 from a 2001 TJ. If you don't need it yesterday I'd keep looking for cheaper units

Yeah I know that you would have to redrill due to the clocking.. but I think that one was ran hard off road and not sure of the shape of it actually. This is my daily driver so I need to hunt something down.. I like the idea of the rebuilt one with the warranty.. you never know what you are getting with the used.. and that makes me nervous.. the rebuilt option is actually at a shop in Indy.. they have good reviews and it's not too far.. talked with them on the phone and they seemed reliable.. I have been watching Craigslist for months for jeep items and haven't came close to anything in that price around here.. who knows.. thanks for the replies so far tho!

Duh go for the rebuilt. You know what the history is, and you have a warranty.

I dont know where you go those prices from, but I would keep looking. I paid $200 for my AX15 used. Been in for a year of abuse now and still shifts perfect. Got it on CL.

Been scouring craigslist, ebay and local ads and nothing on an ax15. like posted above, the used I have found are nowhere near $200. I would love that as an option, but around here there are no ax15's to be found. I'll keep loking for a few more days, but I dont see a $200 ax15 as an option at the moment..

Ok going with the rebuilt.. question tho.. on the 94 4.0 5 speed, so I have to remove the starter too? This is my first tranny removal, so I'm kinda clueless..

Just an update.. Got the tranny out last Thursday.. Drove over to Indy and picky up a freshly rebuilt trans. Threw it in Friday night to find out is was an ax15 for a cherokee. I was 6 bolts away from having it in, when I tried to mount the 4wd shifter.. And no bolt hole.. Then I looked at the tc to see if it was sitting right and yup clocked 10 degrees for the cherokee.. I guess I should of looked it over when I picked it up to verify that it was what I ordered.. So now I have to repull it and drive it back to Indy to have them swap out the tail section. So another day of driving and working on it.. The shop was horrible acting about giving me the wrong trans btw.. Was just like sorry about your luck with all the wasted time installing and driving..
