Tire question

I know nothing about tires...well, really about anything mechanical to be honest .

My question is this...I currently have 225 75r15 tires on my YJ now. I would like to go to a 31". How do I read the tire to tell me that it is actually a 31" tire???

I know the question is silly, but if I don't ask I won't know ...right??

a 31" tire will say 31x10.5R15, 31 is height, 10.5 is inches wide, r15 is rim size (15")

31's are a tight fit under stock yj, might want shackle lift, or go w/ 30's.

regular tire sizes also can equal the size you want, or close. i have 265/75r15 on my daily driver xj, and they measure 30.5".

You're right. But I am replacing the stock springs with new 3.5" springs. so the replacement won't happen until the springs get replaced.

From what i read before....isn't 8.5 the most I want to go with width?? Please correct me if I'm wrong here.

no, if an 8.5" width even exists on 31" tires, that would be very thin. From what you've described, you can easily do 31x10.5 or even 31x12.5

w/ 3.5 lift i'd go bigger than 31, but 33 is a little tight on a yj w/ 3.5. 32's would be perfect fit

Just for comparison.I have a stock 89 yj i have 31x10.5x15 on it.With stock rims they rub the springs on tight turns.I switched to a different rim with less backspacing and have room to spare.Although i would not attempt to crawl as there is probably only about an inch clearance in the flare. They would definitely rub.But hey, mines not lifted.
