TJ tailgate hinges on YJ

I was wondering if tailgate hinges form TJs are interchangeable with those from YJs. They look a bit sturdier and better for putting a greasing port in them.

Yep, interchangeable and quite a bit stronger. Though if you're doing this for bigger tires (anything over 33") I hope your reinforcing your tub at the mounting points. The one thing that is nice about the YJ hinges is that the hinges tend to give first. By putting TJ hinges on you'll likely have the tub give first.

No, it'll be hosting 31's till I make a swing out carrier. After that either nothing or some small cargo (less likely thought). Just want to have less issues to come back to. I'll put a greasing port in it and that is it.

Are you sure about that? They look the same but I believe the 1 hole on the tub does not line up.95 YJs have the TJ style but correct hole spacing.I had 1 of each in my hand and they were not the same. You could drill a hole but it may not go through the backing plate inside the tub and inside the wheelwell.

it sounds like it would be much easier to just get/make a tire carrier. u get a trailer axle, bearings and a tube to sit it. u weld it to the bumper and u bend some tube to go around and hold the tire. weld it on and poof u got a tire carrier for like 120

That's the plan, it's just I'll still have to change the hinges 'coz they're too loose and I'm destroying the lock every time I close the tailgate. That's all.

Have you tried to align your tailgate and then tighten up the hinge bolts? You'll need to do that if and when you change hinges anyways.

Sadly, I don't think it's adjustable at this point. But back to the carrier. Any suggestions on the swing-out hinge?

Ummm...that condition would be if the threads on your bolts or the backing plates are shredded. If the bolts still bite, then you should be able to loosen, align, tighten.
Good luck with the swing-out carrier. Wish I could go that route now.

It's not adjustable for a reason that hinges have so much of free play I doubt I'll have that much room for adjustment although it's worth a try.

3 of the 4 holes do align. The one closest to the side of the tub is spaced out further than on a standard YJ hinge. However if you get the hinges from a U-pull, just make sure you get the backing plates too. This is what I did when I picked up the hinges of a TJ when I realized the hole spacing was not the same. The added benefit of the TJ hinge is that you can get rid of the tire bump stop that is attached of the back end of the tub by the side if you want to since the TJ hinge has a built in stop when you open it. I still have not installed the TJ hinges that I got but once I do I'll post pictures of it.

Im positive that a certain year has TJ style made for a YJ from the Factory. so technically the TJs are a copy of the YJs.Ive had 1 of each in my hand from a TJ I parted out and a set off a YJ that a friend gave me when he used a YJ tub for a CJ7 swap

Care to elaborate? Never seen them for a light truck application? What are you running?

in 96 they put some tj parts on the very last yj that were built but they were drilled for the tj backing plate so those did fit. but again only a few were made with them.

No The spacing was different.Ive held them in my hands and compared them
If anything they starting making TJ hinges in 95 and used a few on YJs but with the correct spacing.
