To buy new 4.2 or go ford 302

Need input on making my mind up.

I'm replacing my old worn out 4.2.

Decision number 1
Buy rebuilt motor of eBay 2,000 with higher lifting cam

Put pacesetter header on it additional 300.00

Put offenhauser intake on it additional 300.00

I already have a hei distributor and a new Holley carb.


Decision number 2

Used 70,000 miles ford 5.0 carbed motor 700.00

Pluse engine mounts addition 160.00

Ax15 tranny adapter plate 350.00

Installation with odds and ends 700.00

I feel better buying the 4.2 cause it gets better mpg, uses cheaper gas and has 7 year warranty 70,000 miles and plus I can do all the work myself

But the 5.0 has lots of power, sounds great

The fuel injected 4.0's have a good reputation for reliability.

4.0L I can understand but the 4.2L I wouldn't waste my money on.

The 4.2 seems far more practical; but the 302 seems like more fun. But, as much as I love v8s, I say go with the 4.2, cause it's still your daily driver

Was thinking about doing that too eventually... On the 4.2 what does the lifted cam do... Increase displacement or open the valves... I always get confused... The cam is the bottom so it should increase displacement or, increase compression. Whatever. I'd go with the 4.2 have a pair of borla headers everyone thinks I'm running an 8. The cylinders are so large you get that growl anyway. Plus I'm still doing 18 mpg city with nearly 200 k. on it, not rebuilt still stock still carbureted. Although if you do highway driving maybe the 5.0 would be a better daily, seeing as how you could probably hit 80... Have extra set of bitmap headers if you go with the 4.2

I paint my jeep every year. After about a year of spray on the jeep it starts looking a little faded but hey it only costs 100.00 dollars to repaint. My jeep turns head everywhere it goes and people love the flat od green I'm in the process of doing a how to cause I'm painting it the Iraq desert color now it takes about five hours in front of your house and you have a new paint job.

I say 302 with a 2 barrel....should get the same mileage as your 4.2.

don't they make a stroker kit for the 4.2... i think it strokes it to 4.6 or something like 280 something ci. something like that. Personally i went with the jeep i did specifically for the carb. pull the computer and your left with an almost completely mechanically operated vehicle. this digital revolution is for the birds!!!

Flatlander Racing - AMC 258 Stroker Kits

they're saying you can get 30% more power out of your 4.2 i read in 4x4 magazine this guy stroked his 4.2 and had 290 lb ft torque at 1200 rpm, peaked at 330 at 2800.

this would be my option, if money wasn't a factor.

seriously, but up there. considering you'd still have to rebuild the engine. hone and clean the cylinders so, minus what they'll give you for the stroker kit, you're still gonna be out like 800 dollars if you have them clean up the block and head at a shop and rebuild the engine yourself. but, I doubt you get that kind of power out of a 5.0
especially that kind of low end power.

but you could also be like, well your 11 can't touch my (insert year here) plus sounds better and looks the part. I imagine it'd be pretty much unstoppable.
