Tranfer case issue

My transfer case is shot, it is a 231 AMC. can i replace it with any 231 case? The transmission is a A904 automatic which seems to be pretty rare at this time.

I think you will need a 231j, but the input spline has to be the same as yours.

You should be able to take the input gear out of yours and install it in the NP231j.

AMC didn't have any t-cases of their own that I know of. If its a 231, its a New Process t-case. It might be a "c" style but I kinda doubt it. Since that has the front driveshaft coming out of the passenger side. If its old enough it might have a NP207 in it.

I am not sure what year you have and engine, but mine is a 93 auto with the 4.0L. Based on mine with the TF999(32RH) trans, the transfer case is 231j with 23 spline and long shaft. The # of splines and length of the input shaft vary - so you can't just grab a TC and assume it will match
