I had almost the same problem last year and got really lucky. I tore the transmission down and found a bolt lying at the bottom of the case. Apparently, some dumbass engineer decided that it would be great to put in an upside down bolt into one of the shifter arms. (ETA: The bolt apparently vibrated out and dropped to the bottom of the case.) A dab of locktite and plenty of swear words later, the tranny was put back in and operates great.

The bottom line, you need to pull the tranny out. Inspect your clutch to make sure that is really not a problem. When the tranny is out, play with the levers and see if anything is grabbing. Taking the tranny apart is not a big deal, but you need a manual to make sure you dont mess with the wrong bolts. I downloaded a breakdown of the ax-5 off the internet but dont have the link now. Pay attention to how everything slides out.

If your syncros or gears are fried then you'll obviously need to open the piggy bank. However, if you find a solo bolt lying in the bottom of the case then pm me for some choice words to use for that effing engineer.

I have a 95 with the ax-5 and mine did the same thing. I pulled the tranny and replaced the clutch and found the release lever that goes on the throw out bearing had a little spring behind it on the passenger side and the spring popped off. I put it back and replaced the clutch and now it is fine.

well, I finally got around to pulling the transmission. the shafts in the tranny spin fine but still wont go into gear. Will update more as I go. Can anyone tell me what I need to look for as far as opening it up? Nothing is gonna spring out at me I hope.

it could just be between 2 gears you just have to get it lined up and pop it out

ok, after much fighting and a hurt finger.... got everything off the tranny but could not get it to come apart...took all the right bolts out none of the wrong ones...and fought with it...have come to a conclussion...take it somewhere and let someone else deal with it. Sounds bad coming from someone who deals with industrial sized gear boxes lol. will update on what I find out

i'm having a similar problem, not entirely though. It has a real tough time going into first, seems almost impossible, but i can manage to get it in. Then this past weekend i went wheelin out on the range and 2nd gear kept poppin out, i'm think worn synchro on that part. btw its a 4-speed. any suggestions before i replace or tear this thing apart?
