ya, regular gl4 or 5 gear oil eats the brass synchros, and the manuals and computers do tell you the wrong info, they say what you used is fine. gotta get fluid that is compatible with brass syncrhos, most synthetic gear oils, or redline, or royal purple, but read the labels.

Valvoline synchromesh is synthetic and safe for brass a little more than 6 bucks a quart at autozone .

i ran 50w years ago in my first yj after it started acting up from using the wrong stuff that the manuals instruct us to use. it actually shifted easier, i've been hearing more and more people using even 30 weight, i'd consider it.

its funny that so many can be fine, accept what they call for.

if i were fairly less mechanically inclined i'd just stick with a gear lube recommended for brass synchros, a synthetic 80w90, syncromesh, or the likes.

I am a mechanic of 27 years ,I have been reading/hearing nothing but good things about synchromesh and have had it in my yj for 3 weeks now and 70-150 miles a day sometimes more ,the difference was not dramatic but it is noticeable .But then again try whatever you want ,if you dont like the results and as long as you dont blow the tranny then its no harm/no foul ,changing the fluid is as easy as a few bucks for new fluid and removing 2 threaded plugs .

Synchromesh is for standard tranny's ,safe for brass parts and is type GL-5 .The 5 speed has never shifted better ,and does not whine at all.
