Trans Problems

I have an 89 wrangler, and it has a 4.2l with an amx-15. It has shifting problems, I changed the gear oil and that helped with the shifting from 1-5, but still cant down shift unless stoped and that is even a problem. when i drained the trans fluid it was a brownish color. I replaced it with 80w90. what else could be wrong with it?

those are a remove and replace item. I would try running synthetic oil first. I had trouble with plain old gear oil.

I know this may be a stupid question but how will synthetic help that much?

can't give the technical reason, just experiance. I run mobile 1, and most people I wheel with use it also. I lived near Detroit 10 years ago, and found the jeep just shifted better, even on the coldest winters. When I first changed the gear oil I used regular valvoline 75-90 gl-5, just like the owners manual said. it was wrong. hard to shift, didn't want to down shift, couldn't put it into 2nd gear when cold. switched to synthetic and problems went away.

just pull your tranny and rebuild it, its not that expensive and its not to difficult if you have the right tools and instructions

Hey Devil Dog, I just replaced my trans because I had bad syncros and was unable to downshift into 2nd or 3rd. I also had a bad vibration when I let off the gas in 5th. I was going to rebuild my own but Jasper does it a lot better then I could ever do and it comes with a nice warranty too. It is going to cost you quite a few dead presidents but it is worth it in the long run. Aisin recommends you use a synthetic synchro mesh gear oil in their transmissions. It is a lot better for the synchros. I hope this helps you....
