Question TRANS QUESTION on a 4 banger

First off I am a new member. I own 2 Yj's 88 and 91 Islander Edition. On both these things I have a slight trans. fluid leak. Quarter size spot on the drive way after I drive either of them. My question is Where the trans mounts to the motor at the bottom of the trans between the two bolts there is a slot/gap/opening approx. 1" wide and its made like this. Is this a vent for something? I went out and got some high temp gasket maker and sealed the whole bottom part of the seal up where the trans bolts up to motor. I did this on the 88 model and it does'nt leak a drop anymore but I have been scared to drive it alot due to wondering if this was supposed to have small gap in the bottom? Do you think I am good to go or did I mess up? I thank you for taking the time to read this.

welcome. 1st they are jeeps, so they leak. Did you see any fluid stains around the area you placed the sealer? I don't think it would be a vent, Do you have picture?

from waht you are describing i would say it is for water drainage....any leak taht comes out of the bellhousing would not be from that spot....that may be where it comes out but that is not what it is from.....it is either from the rear main seal of the engine(motor oil) or it is coming from the input shaft seal of the tranny.....how did you identify it as trans fluid....if they are manual then it will be hard to tell the difference other than the gear oil reaking of crap.....
