transfer case leaking trans fluid PLEASE HELP

Hi, new to the forum. I have a 1991 jeep yj and it seems that there is trans fluid leaking from the transfer case. its leaking right at the point where the transfer case meets the driveshaft (or i guess the driveshaft comes out of the transfer case). it looks like a seal is just busted or loose. its leaking slowly (20 seconds in between) so i am wondering what i should do. do i need a new transfer case or can i just put a new seal on it?

You can replace the seal. Get yourself a service manual and it should walk you through the steps. I have not done it myself, but I know it can be done.

Its the rear output seal - REALLY REALLY easy to do. Once you get the drive shaft down its pretty self explanatory. But be sure to test the new seal on the drive shaft yoke. Rub a little bit of trans fluid on the yoke and slide the seal over it. The seal should wipe the yoke clean as you move the seal down the yoke.

Use a small flat tipped screw driver to pry out the old seal out. And when putting the new seal it, its best to use a piece of wood that is big enough to span the seal and use a hammer to hit the seal it. Be sure its lined up and not bent. If you bend it you'll have to go get another seal.

its the part of the drive shaft that slides into the transfer case.

Just undo the straps from the rear u-joint on the drive shaft to drop it, and the front part of the drive shaft slides right out of the transfer case.

Since i have lost some of the trans fluid where can i put more fluid? Should I put it where the normal transmition fluid goes in? Thanks again

On the back side of the T-case there are 2 rather large bolts that are drain and fill plugs. Take the top one out and then the bottom to drain the rest of the fluid out. then replace the bottom one and fill'er up. once it starts to come out the fill hole your done. Put the fill plug back in and your good to go.
