I drive a 95 YJ Sahara Edition with about 165,000km (around 100,000 miles). I off road regularly.
On a highway trip a few days ago I began to notice some 'stickiness' when shifting, especially gearing down from 4th to 3rd and from 3rd to 2nd. It has gradually gotten worse. Sometimes it grinds and makes a noise. Last night I geared down coming off a ramp on my way home. When I parked I could smell oil. I looked under and sure enough at both ends of the driveshaft there is leaking.
I am travelling and I do not have the means to do any work myself. I discussed the problem with a mechanic and it has been suggested that there normally should be no link between the grinding gears and the leaks at the differential or the transfer case.
I'm a new Jeep owner, not very learned at mechanics, and a little confused by these seemingly two different issues happening at the same time....
