I recommend synchromesh for the tranny. I had some shifting issues when I picked my Jeep up, changed to synchromesh & it seemed to help. It has my vote.

As for the motor, just go with a good conventional oil. I'm running valvoline in my jeep. For an oil filter I would go with either a MoPar filter or a Wix. My local Orielly's has the MoPar filters in stock & had them competitively priced with Fram, Wix & other name brands.

Synchromesh is made by Pennzoil. It goes in the tranny.

No, you don't need synthetic oil in a 23 year old motor regardless of the mileage. Keep it simple & go with a conventional (non synthetic) motor oil. It's done the job since 1991, why change it now? Know what I mean?

I think what he is saying is...

Conventional motor oil will protect your engine perfectly. Synthetic motor will protect your engine perfectly. You can pick either one and not go wrong.

BUT

Conventional costs less and most of us run conventional. I run Synchromesh in the trans and Wal-mart 10w-30 in the motor. The advantage to a full syn motor oil is mainly longer life. Yes there are other benefits such as cold start protection. But, for a Jeep engine, you are mainly looking at longer life out of the oil.

I'm running 10w30 synthetic in my trans with no problems and regular 10w30 in the engine.
