transmission help!!!! 2.5 1991 yj

hello i have a 1991 jeep wrangler with a 2.5 liter and a manual transmission. the engine has about 125--- miles on it but it is freshly rebuilt. i was driving today on the interstate in fifth gear and i started hearing a knocking noise. pulled over and checked under the hood to see if the fan was knocking something but nothing. starter her up and she was alright. started driving again and shifted like normal and got to fifth gear and heard a nasty grinding noise and it seemed like it wouldnt engage. pulled back to fourth right away. not to up on transmissions so i have no idea what the problem is. i just rebuilt the engine so im low on money at the moment. does anyone know what the problem is and maybe a solution?

Knocking, 9 times out of ten, is little to no trans fluid.

Grinding is a whole other noise alltogether---and a lot of variables. Although unless you live in miles of flat, I've never found a use for 5th gear---it's the AX-5's fatal flaw, usually immediate power loss by design as soon as you upshift... I get chatter in 5th, but no other gears, which is fine. This could be pressure plate seating, the 4th-to-5th gear synchro, or a hydraulic problem.

suggest

Suggest you check the fluid and drive it in 4th. Forget 5th exists.

The ax5 has a clip that usually falls off or breaks that holds 5th gear in place. There is a thread on here for repairing it...

I have a 90, and lost fifth gear also(just driving down the interstate). It had pushed that clip off. Rebuilt it, did it agian within 30 miles. Tried to weld the clip in place, didnt work. Bought a rebuilt and stayed in 4th. Good Luck

i blew a hole in my ax 5 while moving from one parking spot to another , dang bolt came out of it..plugged her up and filled it full of fluid and what do ya know all gears works driving it till it blows apart completely..going on three months now...i use my 5th but i have 4.88 gears too. when your tranny goes consider spending more to up grade to ax 15..they make a complete retrofit around 2k..but most likely be the last time u replace your tranny

Ill tell you a lame story.

My AX-5 at 80,000 miles began horrid grinding and locked me out of most gears. Two 'professional' (knucklehead) mechanics each told me all synchros were shot which is mathematically impossible since they are seperate components...

Found a guy on Craigslist dumping an Ax-5 for $400. I met him. He was a Jeeper entering the Air Force and parting his two wranglers. His trans had a VERIFIED 15,000 thou on it.

I said, yeah oh yeah.

Me and him and his buddy did the switchout. When we dropped the skidplate we could clearly see the tranny mount (rubber part and metal rod) has loosened from frame. There was nothing wrong with my ORIGINAL AX-5!

We proceeded with the switchout because 400 for 15M tranny was decent. He had a low-mileage clutch we installed too for free.

LESSONS:
1) Some Craigslist deals are clean and good
2) LOOSE/BUSTED TRANNY MOUNTS CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE--ALIGNMENT OF TRANS/ENG IS EVERYTHING

No probs since.

Thanks!
