Transmission Oil?

Getting a used transmission soon! What should be done to the tranny before installation? What is a good oil to use in the transmission and how often should you change it ?

Its a 5 speed manual. I also heard you could use Pennzoil syncromesh oil, is that true?

Does the motor oil ruin the syncros?

Nope from what I have read the original factory recommended fluid for the 5 speed is the kind that destroys the synchros I think its gl4 or gl5 fluid I'm not sure but now they say synthetic 10w30 is best I think it's cheaper too

My YJ has bad syncros between 3rd and 4th on downshift...I knew this when I bought it. I drained the fluid, flushed with 10w30 and drove 20 miles.....it was rougher shifting, I re filled with Syncromesh and it is now shifting better to where if I am careful there is rarely any gear grinding. I suspect I will be doing a reman tranny replacement at some point.

I have bad synchros so I switched to the redline mt-90 smooth as butter now despite all the brass shavings when I drained the 10w-30 out. It's pricey but putting off my tranny swap until I can't run with the top down is priceless
