transmission problems

I have a 95 YJ with a 4 cyl. I lost 5th gear again. We had it rebuilt once and it didn't last 6 months. What can I use for a swap on a budget.

advance adaptors makes an adaptor plate for the ax15 but there is more involved, in all seriousness, really, dump all the drive line and put in a 5.0 or a 350. take the tranny and all with it. sorry but putting a bigger tranny behind a weaker engine just doesn't make sense to me. your only fixin half the problem, sorry just my 2 cents. i've had both the 4 cylinder and 6, ill never own a 4 again. but thats your choice jsut take my advise into consideration before putting more money into it!!

The ax5 is a weak trans. I am on my third one in 5 years. Have lost 4/5 once, next was more of the same. That one lasted 10 days. This one has lasted about 2 years. Now third is gone. I have almost as much in the tranny has I paid for the jeep. Each time it costs me about 1000.00 or so to fix it. I have found several rebuilt units for about the same money, but I don't want to buy one and have more of the same in another couple of years. A swap may be the best fix.

What can I swap in instead of the AX-5? And how hard will it be to do that? i like the 4 banger and would like to keep it.

i wonder if swapping in the auto would be his easiest cheapest out. no manual trans you can swap in will be under a grand, and will require modification. but then probably gotta find computer and wiring to. no matter what you're spending a couple grand.

go old school and find a t 18.

i think if you can find an original, untouched low mileage ax5 you'd have better luck. the rebuilds seem to suck. at least they lasted a little while from the factory

700 without shipping, i guess go for it, but you gotta get a different input shaft, and also a either a different output shaft or different tcase.

Transmission-$700
Adapter-$?50?
Input shaft-$??
How hard is that to swap
Out put shaft-$?
It sounds like it would end up being close to a grand any way I go. The AX-15 was put behind the 6cyl wrangler right? so what do they run for a t-case?

ax 15 was behind 6 cyl. it is not worth the work or the money to swap it in. put in a used ax 5 for $300- $400, or upgrade the whole driveline is my opinion

Don't bother wasting money on the advanced adapters adapter plate. The Dodge Dakota ran the AX-15 behind the 2.5. You can use that bell housing.

There's a write up on the swap on Pirate 4x4.

You can also buy a NV3550 and everything needed to swap it online (can't remember the company) for a like 2500-3000.

Oh the fears I have of my AX-5 failing ha ha.

Good luck man.

Not making me feel any better haha. I don't know what's gonna happen with it. I love the 2.5, its really a great little motor, but the synchros are definitely worn in the AX-5. Blows big time cause I owe money on the damn thing, and I had my mechanic drive it before getting it. Its fallin apart since. Everything else is great. Perfectly reliable little Jeep, but cleaning it up and putting it on craigslist and finding a 4.0 w/ a D44 is looking mighty tempting.

I know what you mean sometimes I wonder if by fixing it I'm just digging myself deeper because there is that chance that it could completely fall into a heap someday. Like today when I parked it in the garage there was gas dripping from the fuel line I'm guessing and at gas prices today I can't afford that.

I'm not sure its worth selling my first jeep haha. I love the damn thing. Fuel lines, hoses, stuff like that. I don't mind fixing that stuff.

But gotta say 1200 bucks for a new tranny that's basically guaranteed to go 100,000 miles may actually be a small price to pay to keep this jeep.

I mean, isn't that the jeep way? Go out and break it, and fix it yourself.

Oh the confusiion.

But I only paid $3500 for it. So if I can get 4 grand out of it and put that towards a TJ that will go a hell of a lot further and not give me a new project every week. I'm con fused also on the big question: to sell or to stay faithful and fix til death do us part.
