Question Transmission Rattle

morning all!

my transmission rattles horribly between the speeds of 58 and 64. it doesn't matter whether or not i'm in either 4th or 5th gear. at speeds less than or greater than, it runs smooth and fine. (92 6cyl, 5sp, ax-15)

my original thought was it is low on fluid, but that doesn't seem to make much sense. however, i'm stumped as to what else it could be. new clutch and master cylinder about 5,000 ago so thats out. the rattle itself sounds like it is on the top side almost as if it was coming out of the stick shift itself. i tried to move the stick around to see if it was somehow "out of place" during that speed, but it was pretty tight. very little movement and any play it had didn't make a difference.

was considering draining the fluid and replacing to see if that helped, but wanted to ask this question as well. (ok this is probably going to be really stupid, but anyway) i assume that i want to use transmission fluid in the tranny and not gear oil right? yes, sounds dumb, i know, but the local autozoner expert told me i wanted to use gear oil?? really???

thanks for the opinions.

kurt

Ya might try checking the trans mount. Mine was a little loose a while back and had the same symptoms. Crawl underneath and see if you can push the rear driveline up by hand. If so, that's easy to fix. If that isn't the solution, you may need to check and/or replace your u-joints. I lost my front joint on the rear driveline a week ago at low speeds and it scared the crap out of me. Was an easy fix though
Hope this helps

Using the wrong fluid for the wrong application could bung up the works. Is he just suggesting any old trans oil? If you change the type of fluid you have to worry about how it will react with the components, the seals, how the extra viscosity will make your components behave. You will even have to worry about cold weather affecting it.

he is suggesting to use the 75w-90 gear oil like you'd put in your transfer case. i think this is crazy.....the haynes book says to use type II fluid i think (would have to look again).

i can't imagine putting gear oil in a tranny...but that's why i'm asking if anyone else has done that or what they use for their 5sp??

thanks!!!!!!!

Gear oil goes in the Transmission IF it is a manual. Usually 75W-90. A lot of people here use Synchromesh from what I have gathered.

An Automatic Transmission get DEXRON II (or Mopar ATF 7176)

The Transfer Case gets DEXRON II Transmission Fluid.

ok, well here is what i found: there is a spacer missing between the tranny mount and the skid plate on the driver side. so, will have to get one and get that fixed. it would also appear the two nuts in the middle of the skid plate, also holding up the transmission, are not tight at all. the bolts themselves are either stripped or the nuts are too big to fit tightly...........finally, i stripped the tranny drain plug trying to get it out. it is either never come out before, or the PO jackhammered it into place! ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!

so, anyway, thanks again for all of your help yesterday. hopefully, the missing spacer and loose nuts will solve the rattle. the tranny plug will just have to wait for the time being.

PO probably brought it to a shop where they used the wrong torque setting like so many do putting on wheels.

Glad we were able to help a little. If the rubber in the tranny mount is gone and you can't find another, let me know. I probably have a used (but good condition) mount in the shop.
