Transmission swap

I have an 87 with a 4.2, with a 5 speed. My question gas to do with the trans. As you might have guessed I have a BA 10/5 and it is about shot. My question is "are there any direct fit transmissions that would replace my BA 10/5"

If I remember correctly, the AX15 should bolt up, not sure about clutch linkage issues though.

Yeah an AX15 will bolt right up, but your gonna have to have the transfer case too. Yours has a 21 spline input and the ax15 has a 23 spline output

So I can just swap out the AX 15 its tranfer case for what I have and I will be good to go. That makes life alot easier. My next question would be, "other than the Wrangler what else did the AX15 fit into?"

they used the ax15 in the Cherokee.
The AX15 Transmission - Novak Conversions

you can also change the input shaft on your current t-case to the proper spline count, jb sells one at:
JB Conversions, Inc.
there are 2, one long and one short, choose wisely.

Toyota had a similar tranny built on the same basic design...

The np231 came with a 21 spine input from a Cherokee and a 23 for a wrangler. The Cherokee and newer np231 from tjs?? don't have through vacuum port for the front axle....

I will weigh my options and decide. I will admit that I am leaning more to replacing the shaft. Is this a big job?

Gotta split open the transfer case. It's kind of a big job. Still haven't done mine yet

If you're going to split the case, it would be a good idea to do a full rebuild on the t-case and drop in an SYE at the same time. It is out of the vehicle and on the bench, might as well get it all done at once.

Though you may likely find you can buy a used AX15 and t-case for a Wrangler together rather easily. I know I see them on Craigslist pretty regularly.

the 2.5L came with the 21 spline, and the 6 cylinders (AX15 and BA10) came with 23 spline. Cherokees are the same way.

My 90 YJ with 2.5L has the 21 spline, When I bought a replacment tcase from a 93 with the AX15, I was forced to replace the input shaft it had a 23 spline.

I want my old tcase repaired, the one I bought has a blown out set of low gears (just found out last week) so im pushing the wife (read "butt kissing") for her to slow down on groceries so I can get the JB ultra short SYE, shaft and electric speedo....
Should be a $700 ish repair with my labor.

Also:
450920 Diff Cable Lock Kit Jeep Wrangler YJ 3-6" | eBay

should fix your vacuum issues for the front axle.
