OK my son has a 92 Jeep Wrangler YJ that we have put a mutitude of parts in. The newest issue is sputtering and backfiring then running OK for a while and then back to sputtering and backfiring. We have replaced in all the mega fuses, starter, battery, alternator, O2 sensor, wires, cap, rotar, spark plugs, fuel filter and the sending unit. I know not all of these are related but they were for other issues. I am just at a loss of what to do now. We just replaced the fuel filter yesterday and it worked for a little bit but then started running rough again. Any ideas of what to check next.

The sputtering and backfiring is commonly cause by a bad cam sensor. Or one that is starting to go bad. It is located in the base of the distributor under the rotor.

Sounds like its a timing issue if it is doing it repeatedly. If its only doing it once in awhile then I would lean more towards a TPS (throttle positioning sensor) or an IAC (idle air control) both are located on the throttle body. Sometimes these can be taken out and cleaned with a can or carb cleaner and a brass brush, and others they just need replaced.
