Troubles maintaining speed in 5th

Ive gotta 91 YJ and when im riding on the highways ive had problems driving in 5th. Once i get into 5th i slowly start losing speed from about 60mph it just keeps dropping even on flat land, no matter how much gas i give it, it wont hold speed. So ive just resorted to staying 4th even on interstate and trying to stay at about 55 or so. Any recommendations on what to check or how to fix?!

thanks!

What size tires, motor and have the gears been changed?

33" tires and 3in body lift, if that means anything. I just bought it about a month ago i havent done anything mechanically besides fluid changes and what not, so i have no idea if anything has been changed

My 88 does the same exact thing. . . I keep it in 4th at high speeds for now. Same tires(33's and 3" lift).

You'll need to regear to i'd say 4.88 gears for that tire size. Your gears are the reason you lose power because of the big tires size.

1991 + 4banger + AX5 (your 5speed) = factory 4.10's.

To get you back to factory with 33's and your motor/trans combo.....4.88's is the answer.

Welcome to the forum bud.

yea i run the factory 3.07's with 33's, yea i got the 4.0 but 5th gear is still fairly wimpy on medium hills i just stay in 4th gas mileage does not change between 4th and 5th. id love some new gears but i wont put in gears w/o doing a full rebuild and throwing in a set of lockers.

im about to drop down to 31s pretty soon so i can use it for commuting purposes. i have some suspension work and under the hood stuff i want to do before takin it on the trails again. So if i put the 31s on there would that help fix the problem? or will it pretty much stay the same?

It'll help more than the 33's will.

I have a 4" lift and 33's and theres a hill that I have to drive up every morning that if I don't hit it going 60 (or close to it) I have to shift to 3rd just to get up it going 40 mph

And my 5th gear only really works to keep me going on flat ground

i can star up a hill going 55-60 and top it at or about 40-45 maybe.. lol 2-2.5 lift 31-10.50 4cyl 5 spd... flat ground=5th gear.... lol interstate around here=4th gear and 55 unless down hill=5th gear and 70-75.. ROFL ;D
