U-Joint Replacement

Hey Everyone-

Well, I am thinking of replacing all of my U-joints on the 95 Wrangler I recently purchased. I was thinking of attempting to replace the front and rear u-joints myself and halfing a mechanice replace the u-joint in my front axle. They all look orginal and rusty. I am hearing a mild squeak noise coming from the front left wheel area (or underneath the front of the jeep somewhere) when I am driving and figured it may be one of the u-joints. I got a quote from a local dealer that said it would cost me $150 to replace the front and rear drive shaft u-joints (4 total), and that's if I buy/bring my own u-joints. They said it would cost $240 to replace the front axle u-joints (2 total) if I buy/bring my own u-joints. They said it's a little more complicated to replace the u-joints in the axles which I can understand.

What does everyone think about these prices?

It looks like it is pretty easy to replace the driveshaft u-joints. I may do those myself.

Any suggestions on the whole process and what I should do?

Thanks!

Try this

Axle Ujoint replacement in a YJ Dana 30 - JeepForum.com

Not really a hard job at all. Practice on the axle u joints first to get an idea how they install

Be careful of buying your own parts to a shop and having them install them. Most won't stand behind there work or the part (obviously).

U-joints are a piece of cake. Read some of the DIY guides.

I may try and do them myself. I read my manual and it looks like the rear driveshaft u-joints are super easy to replace. Hmmmm.

just a thought im going to through in here.... if your going to replace your front axle u joints then you might just want to replace the wheel hubs also, if they look roughed up. you could kill 2 birds with 1 stone...just a thought.

I had thought about that. I will probably do that since they look original.

yeah, we had a bolt break off in one of the hubs when we changed the front axle U-joints. (By hand w/ a ratchet) Picked up a new one... the old had some slop anyways.

The U-joints at autozone where $10 for standard and $15 for Offroad, lifetime warranty ones. I went for the $15... they are red and black and stamped "MADE IN USA".

I'm a firm believer in replacing all the wearable parts when doing any repairs. Cheap insurance.
