Unexplained whine and disappearing coolant

Hello all,
Thanks for all the help on my last threads. Now I have a few new problems, recently there has been a whining sound that I cannot find the source. It has been gradually getting worse and is affected by the engine RPMs and is still noticeable at an idle. Also, my coolant has been disappearing, there are no traces of leaks or coolant in the oil. On occasion my exhaust smells funny. Any ideas?
Thanks again,

is the noise coming from the water pump? Also check around the weep hole on the pump. If it's leaking the water pump is going bad...What motor you running? How much coolant are you loosing? How often do you have to add coolant. Coolant doesn't disappear, it leaks out or is burned in the combustion cycle..very different issues to address.

Try tightening your manifold bolts. Coolant runs through the intake manifold. The funny smelling exhaust could be from running your Jeep on gasoline and coolant. Coolant leaking past the gasket and being sucked into the combustion chamber.

If simply tightening the manifold bolts doesn't cure the problem, you may need a new intake and exhaust gasket set.

Good Luck, L.M.

Get a cooling system pressure tester and put the system under pressure. You should find the leak easily once you put some force behind it.

You should be able to rent or borrow a cooling system tester at your local parts store.
Purchasing a decent one will run you around $100.00.

You will want to blast your engine compartment at the quarter car wash first. Cover your distributor with a large plastic bag and still don't spray directly on it.

Allow your Jeep to cool off before opening the radiator cap. I don't know if pressurizing your cooling system will show up a leak into the intake manifold.

Before you do anything, tighten your manifold bolts. Takes about 10 min. and doesn't cost anything.

I will do that, what is the recommended torque?

I don't know off the top of my head.

The information is listed in the FSM. You can find a link to several FSMs in MudMagnetYJs signature.

The problem of the whine is my alternator, and there was a squeaking sound which was simply coolant on the belt from both hose connections. I was just underneath my jeep, and there is a small crack on the left side of the water pump bulge. It appears to have oil leaking out of it. Do I need a new block? Or is there like a putty or something I can fill it in with?

You have a cracked engine block? Or water pump?

Putty won't fix anything.

If your block is cracked (you should post a few pics) you will probably be looking at a new or used motor.
Fortunately you have a 4.0 and Cherokee donor vehicles aren't difficult to find.

First, I would post the pics and if you truly have a cracked block, it may be able to be welded. If it's even possible, you need an experienced professional welder... not a neighbor with a home garage welding machine.

If you can even find anyone that experienced, the cost for the job might outweigh the cost and benefit of a reman engine. I don't know anything about welding cast, but I do know that a crack in any hard and brittle material just keeps expanding.

The alternator was a part of the sound but the other noise is still present.....could it be my fan? It has notches on each blade due to my tire wrench falling in the engine compartment and rattling around.. Could the slight imbalance of the blades cause this sound?

Yes.

Based on your previous posts, here is what I am guessing you have discovered and what you have done to cure it.

1)- Coolant was leaking onto your serpentine belt and causing it to squeal.

2)- You climbed under your Jeep and discovered a crack. You state that the crack is seeping oil and you put some JB Weld on it.
In your post #14, you seem to state that the crack has coolant seeping from it.
I am guessing you mistook coolant for oil.

You state that you still have the squeal.

Here is what I suggest:

1)- Go back one page to YJ General Discussion Forum. Open it.

2)- Click on "A Better way to get help when posting on the technical forum". Read the first post twice. Read it again.

3)- Search this forum for "YJ Belt". You should find several threads dedicated to which serpentine belt is best.

4)- Buy the best belt you can afford and put it on your Jeep.

Let us know if this cures the squeal.

You seem unable to post a pic of where you found the crack. By posting a pic of the crack, we will be better able to help you.

Good Luck, L.M.

Chief, I agree with you as far as learning any skill aboard ship at sea vs. learning a skill landside.

Our CPO wouldn't accept anything less than perfection on "his" ship (Well, it was my ship too).
If a wheel falls off a vehicle landside the vehicle might wreck. If a bulkhead fails, the entire ship and its compliment of sailors and marines sink. (Wouldn't miss the marines too much. We never had to repel boarders).

The Navy trained welder will need more of a welder than a home garage mig to weld a cracked block.

Of course this is just good natured inter-service rivalry. When any of our armed service members go in harms way, they have my (and I'm sure your) complete full support. L.M.
