That's a good ballpark. The 4.2 is a low-RPM torque motor....max torque is @ 2000 or so.

At an rpm where you are not lugging the motor in the next gear up. You should be able to push on the pedal and accelerate, not just push the pedal down farther.

You will know when you do it. Another phrase may be "bogging" the motor. It happens when you shift to early and the engine has trouble going at the rate it was. Try pulling from a stop in 3 or 4th gear...same sorta thing.

I pulled the bulb out so long ago I almost forgot it had one...

Shift wihen you feel like shifting, if you feel like your motor is winding out, it probably is....

Your engine tells you when to shift. Especially when to down shift

All YJ's included a shift light, AFAIK they still put them on Wranglers with manuals, but they're basically useless. They don't tell you to shift in the engines ideal power range, infact they often do much lower into the operating range.

Dash lights in yj's make me laugh..... just saw my seat belt light for the first time I have owned the jeep over 2 years. Never seen a shift light. 4x4 light is sporadic.

Remove the center dash indicator plate, hold it up to the light. On 87-90 YJ's it will be on the bottom left of the panel. On 91-95 it should be in the bottom middle:

87-90

91-95

The shift light works ok on the 4.0 for shifting, but on the 4 cylinder you will need to wind it up a bit more (3,000-3,500) to get decent power out of it

The lights both flip on at just shy of 2000rpm, and yes the 2.5L needs to be wound out more. 3500rpm at the most for fuel efficiency.
