Smile V8 and Dana 44

Hi guys, this is my 1st post so be gentle!

I am in the planning stages of my V8 conversion and I am aware that the dana 35 is not really up to the task.

I am wondering if anyone could give me a rough idea of how much HP a dana 44 could take?

Also what is the weakest part of it that would be the first part of the setup to break due to the increase of power?

PS have it will have manual transmission, has 33x10.50 tires and 5inch lift

Thanks!

I'm running a v8, 5 speed , and 33's as well so your in good company.. ....

If memory serves me correctly a D44 is a 8.5" ring gear...should hold up pretty decently to v8 abuse in my opinion..... I wanted one myself but came across Ford 8.8 before i found a D44 so i went with it....

Good luck with your swap .....

ahhh! lovely.

Would you mind telling me which engine you went with and how did the axle swap go? Did you have to do much fabrication or was it fairly straight foreward?

Thanks!

I have pics in my profile but the jist of it is,,,, I went with a Chevy ZZ4 crate engine that i then opened and made a few changes ..I'm running a carb for now because i just got fed up with pouring money into this thing... Injection will follow soon.... I'm still running the AX-15 and the Ford 8.8 is actually an extremely easy swap if you have access and skill with a welder..... I can get into it more tonight when i have time,,, my shop is a zoo right now..

I believe the 44 will handle the torque of the lt1( I believe that's what I read on the other forum), but I would reccomend the 8.8 over the 44 as it has a litter bigger gears, bigger shafts, and generally more splines. Good luck.

I've been told the 8.8 is better than the Dana 44. Bigger axle tubes & gears.

44 or 8.8 are both fine with v8 under 400hp. If your worried get a 14bolt.

I agree with 4Jeepn.
The 14 Bolt is cheap and can find them all over the place. Around my neck of the woods, if you break one, there is a junk yard or a neighbor that has parts. A good 9" ford is a good swap too if you dont mind drums or convert them. For the money a 8.8 is tough but can spend a few more bucks and get the 14 Bolt. A good 14 bolt around here are from $250 and up. Dana 60-70 and top loader 2.5 ton axles are gold around my area.

14 bolt? Can you say OVERKILL!?! but atleast he wouldn't have to worry about breaking your rearend. Rob, the dana 44 or the 8.8 will work just fine, unless your running 44's with 5:38's and putting a forced induction on your motor. Good luck.
