Valve cover leak

I finally got my rear main seal fixed so it's not leaking anymore. Unfortunately, I discovered the valve cover was leaking pretty bad. I had replaced the gasket several months ago with a foam gasket, and I thought it was fine. One thing that surprised me was how low the torque specs for the valve cover bolts is. According to Haynes, it's just 55 in-lbs, which is about 4.5 ft. lbs.

Does this sound right? Is it the same for a foam gasket? I'm thinking I'll torque them down a little bit more just to see--can't make things worse.

If that doesn't work, should I just go with the Blue RTV gasket maker instead, or maybe a combination of both???

The torque is right, but there's a specific pattern you need to follow when tightening the bolts on the valve cover.

Also! Tightening the valve cover is a two step process. It's a double torque down process - you tighten once to a certain level, then you tighten down again.

Does anybody have an update on this or the correct order for tightening down the bolts? I have heard work from the inside out and also an X pattern. I am assuming this means start in the middle and work out in a "criss cross" fashion. Any other info on this from anybody would be greatly appreciated. I have a minor oil leak which is gettting worse from my valve cover on the firewall side that I am trying to take care of.

When I inspected it this morning I found the bolts holding the valve cover down to be loose enough to unscrew with my thumb and forefinger.

The pattern is important in the respect of not warping the cover.
You do want to tighten in an X configuration pattern.
Snug them down, then tighten them down, then torque them down.
Repeat torque sequence until tight.
If you use the wrong gasket then it can come loose over time.
But normally properly torqued bolts work loose quickly when the threads on the bolt or head are worn down.
All threads have a slight taper to them.
If you find that the threads are worn & you can not make a proper repair, try a little of the proper thread lock compound.
Be aware that once you use thread lock, it's a pain to try and remove them later when a high temp locking compound is used.

I use black RTV, run a good bead on the cover, let it set up a little, then install, no leaks

I checked Alldata which doesn't give the tightening sequence. In which case an official diagram might not exist. Just start with the bolts in the middle, and work your way out in sort of a spiral pattern, and you'll be fine. It's not nearly as critical as head bolts.

I'm not sure how many bolts are actually there but just follow this as kind of a general rule of thumb:

It doesn't matter. Especially not if you're using RTV. There's about ten bolts. The ones in the back are a pain in the ass. Do the middle two, (yes, the "bolt within a bolt" ones) then do the corners starting in the back, then fill the rest in. Tighten them until they show a little resistance and then stop. They're designed to snap after over-torquing. Then backing them out is a bitch.

dont torque more than it says to.
