When I drive my yj I have been repeatedly told I'm smoking. (No sh!t) I know folks are trying to be helpful but I'm aware and it's discouraging. Anyhow, I've been told and read it's probably one of the two, valve seals or piston rings. Any ideas the cost to fix them? I wish I had the time and resources to do the jobs myself but it's nothing I've ever done and although I'm pretty mechanically inclined, I doubt it's a job I can take on myself. Thanks in advance for any advice folks.

Valve seals cab done as cheap as you want. You can leave the head in place rent some tools and replace the seals with everything still installed, or you can remove the head and take to a machine shop.

Rings you could do with motor installed and pull the pistons do rings and rod bearing cheap the cost of psarts and lot of work.

All your choice. I have no numbers mine was an overhaul.

Is it blue or white smoke? Blue meaning its oil burning. White meaning water/coolant. If it's blue I would bother with a partial rebuild. You would probably benefit most with a new eng. Only because you could start doing or paying for it and find out you need this and this and oh yea this. But if it's white it might just need a new head gasket. This is time consuming but if you can read instructions and follow them with your mechanical know how you posses you should be fine.

Does it smoke just on start up or all the time. Seals usually cause smoking on start up, ring s will smoke all the time, especially under load .

x2..best bet is have the engine completely rebuilt if you can afford it because the rest of the engine is probably just as worn

Hey guys thanks for the reply. The smoke is blue and will be excessive upon driving it and real bad when I'm at a stop or idling once it gets warm. I'm thinking if buyin a rebuilt motor because I don't have the experience to do one myself and it has multiple other issues like oil leaks etc. any ideas? I heard jasper motors from someone? I don't have a huge budget so I have limited options I'm just tired of this motor it seems to be one thing after another lately and I'd like to start new if possible. Thanks again.
