Question Very loud squeaky belt on my YJ Wrangler

Hi all I recently just purchased another jeep, a '88 wrangler, I haven't had it long and don't know much of it's history but the belt has never squealed this loud or even at all until just a day ago and only when I give it gas. So lets just say it was horrifying driving it home last night on the freeway lol. I checked the pulleys and they seem to be fine and the belts don't seem to look too worn. The power steering belt is a tad loose, could this be the problem? It doesn't squeal when idling or when I put in the clutch but only when given gas. Thank you all for your help

The belt that is "a tad loose" is probably where you are getting the squeal. If properly tightened a V-belt should have a 1/2" of deflection measured at the top between the water pump pulley and the power steering pulley.

'87 YJ, 4.2L built and bored, 8.5" of lift, 8.8 rear, AX15/NP 231, Tom Woods drive shafts, Flat fenders, 12,000LB winch, Custom bumpers, Rattle can paint job. Never completed...

Tighten that belt up.
If it still squeaks then it's glazed from slipping and will need to be replaced.

x3 ^^^^

At idle there isn't as much "pull" on the belt, As RPM's rise the obviously the "pull" becomes harder. If the belt is loose it will cause the squeaks as the RPM's rise. If the belt isn't glazed too bad, tightening it should take care of the noise. If you still got the squeak ... replace the belt. Use the measurement suggestion that 0III0forlife mentions in the above post.

Thanks guys! :)

Thanks everyone. Though I originally thought it was for sure the power steering belt, after getting down and dirty really looking into the problem tonight I realized its the alternator pulley. I think the bearings may be going bad in it, ugh! But hey I did fix the idling problem it was having lol, busted a few knuckles but fixed the air intake valve control and presto! Perfect idle now hehe
