Was told 4.0 auto wont mate up .

Sent my wife to go hear and pay for a 4.0 from a 95 Cherokee with an auto .

My 88 has a ax15 and they said the 4.0 with autos wouldn't mate to a ax15 . Something to do with the crank ?
Huh ? He said he looked it up for us just forgot to call .

Makes no sense or maby he thought was the puegot ? Any. Thoughts guys ?

it'll work you just have to install a pilot shaft bearing.

RE EDIT:There is a crank issue with the small shaft AX15 in a 4.0.The later AX15 does not have this issue.The later AX15 Pilot bearing comes as two pieces.I believe the manual crank only uses the small bearing if it was a manual from the factory.If it was an auto you would use both the bearing and the spacer if installing a late AX15 {Bigger Input shaft version}

EDIT:This is for the early AX15 with the small input shaft

What I did to overcome this was buy an large input AX15 Pilot bushing.Its two piece.Keep the outter portion.Find a bronze bushing that fits the input shaft.If you can find one to fit the shaft and the outer portion of the AX15 Piece then put it in and you are good to go.

I could not find a match for both.I bought a bronze bushing for a Chevy in the "HELP" section.I had the outter AX15 part machined to fit the chevy bushing.That way if it need to be changed you could just buy the chevy bushing and slip it in the spacer.

PM me if you need any help.Its doable for under 50$ total and future bearings are 5-7$.There may be an off the shelf bearing/bushing but Im not aware of one

Pilot bushing

Thank goodness. I have found someone with the same problem as me. I am putting a 1992 Cherokee factory auto setup 4.0 in my 1990 YJ manual. I have run into the notorious pilot bushing problem. I have a pilot bushing that fits the input shaft. The bushing is deeper than the housing. When I machine the housing is it going to be ok for the bushing to be deeper than the housing? My thought is that it will be fine but I wanted to get another wrench heads opinion. Thanks.
