Ways to get more from the 4cyl

What can I do to my 94 yj 4cyl to give it more power? Driving the freeway in mountains sucks. What is there that will improve my power. Or how much work is it to swap it out for a 6cyl?

Best thing you can do is a gear swap to lower gears.. if your bone stock it has 4.11 or 3.73(if you have auto and the 4cly) YOu can swap in 4.88 gears and that will help.. as for swaping in a 6cly.. it might be better to sell your jeep and buy one with the 6cly.. lots of work.. new trans, t-case modes, computer, etc. etc.. most follks bypass the 6 and get V8 as the work is about the same.. Keep in mind if you plan to run bigger tires, the rear dana 35 axle is a weak link.. so you might consider a rear axle swap to something like a dana 44, ford 8.8 or 9" to name a few.. depends on your budget...

Downshift and hold it to the rug.

An engine swap is the right solution for you. I went from the 2.5L to a 4.0L, and it's an awesome upgrade. It's not a cheap swap, as your engine, transmission and transfer case needs to be changed out.

Here's a good starting point for your research:
Leans’ 4.0L swap is complete with pics!

My suggestion - don't waste any money on throttle bodies, electric fans, cat back exhausts, cold air intakes, etc. Save that money and put it into a swap. Alot of people like to put in SBC V8s. Some like 4.0L swaps. Do some research and start collecting parts.

Question: what is an "SBC V8?

Via edit: never mind - I think it came in a flash of revelation. "Short block Chevy." Eh?

A quick and easy way to get HP and torque, try installing a set of Nology spark plug wires. They are about $30 a piece but our 2.5L is quicker off the line and gets better fuel mileage. The big problem with Nology wires, are the clips. Don't be surprise if you have to change out your old spark plug wire clips (on the plug side) and adapt them to the Nology wires.

Sorry, but I'm going to call BS on this. Save your $120 and put it towards an engine swap.

Various schemes to increase 2.5L horsepower have been tried and proven to be a waste of money and time. There's a magazine that did a lot of these mods, and put the Jeep on a dyno after each mod. Basically, it wasn't worth the money or time.
