Weird ignition problem

For the last year I have had the following ignition problem; when it is cold outside, my 95 Wrangler will crank but not start UNTIL I sit there patiently with the key in the "on" position and wait for the sound of a rapid series of "clicks" under the hood. Then the "check engine" light will appear in the dash and the Jeep will start when I crank it! When it is warmer out the delay to wait for the "clicks" is much shorter. With this weather (teens) I have to wait 5-7 minutes. I've taken it to two repair shops (very good ones). Diagnostics show no codes. Grounds are good. Yesterday they gave up and said it "may" be the computer acting up. I want to be sure before I drop a couple hundred (if I can find one!).

Any ideas???

Thanks

Usually the colder weather will help electronics. With computers I know, colder is better. I wonder if the FPR is sticking and it's just worse when it's cold? Where is the clicking coming from? The relays in the box in front of the battery could also be sticking. I would pin point the clicking and try tapping on whatever it to see if it opens up sooner.

Relays

Thanks. I already had a new relay put in. No dice. The clincking sounds like it's coming from the starter area...but not sure.

Ok easy, try beating on the solenoid on top of the starter and see if it cranks.

Crankin'

Crakning has never been a problem. It'll crank til it's blue in the grill. It won't catch unless that check engine light pops on and the clicking under the hood has stopped.

Ok...almost sounds like your ignition switch is loose/corroded...Considering how cheap the ignition switch is I would try replacing that.
When you turn the key to ON does the radio and everything that runs on the accesories circuit come on? I highly doubt it's the ECU, they rarely go bad. Also check and clean all your battery connections to and from the solenoid. This is really a strange one.

I don't have a clue, but it seems to me you need to find out what is clicking and work back from there. You may know this already, but you can use a broom stick or similar object like a stethoscope to help pinpoint noises inside components. I have used a long screwdriver, anything solid will transmit sound vibrations.

I had the same problem this summer. You'd have to sit there and crank and crank, but it wouldn't start. I also did the whole turn the key thing and wait for the fuel pump to click. My problem was a bad computer. I picked one up at a local junk yard for around $100, brand new they are about $500. Took about 10 minutes to install.

Computer

Thanks. That's what I was trying to avoid. I can't seem to find one except in a bone yard for over $200 with no warranties.

Cold start problem

Hi, My son has a 1995 Wrnagler 2.5 liter 5 speed. Last winter when it was below freezing the jeep would crank but not start. I noticed when I turned on the key that the check engine light would not come on. After turning the key on and off a few times I heard the something click and the fuel pump come on and also the check engine light which then went out like normal. It then would start right up. I ended up getting a computer on eBay and have not had a problem since.

Are ya'll refering to the ignition control module as the computer or the cpu module?
