What Dana Rear End Do I have?

Hi All---The rear diff cover on my new 93 YJ, 5 speed, 6 cylinder is leaking gear oil. When I looked I saw the tag that said use special limited slip lubricant, so I guess i have trac-loc. The fluid was coming out of the fill hole plug on the diff cover. But I am use to seeing a metal screw in plug in the fill hole for any other vehicle I have ever owned. This plug though, seemed to be some kind of loose fitting snap in plug. Is that right??? What dana model rear axle is it? I may just buy a better after market cover. Any other info you have would help.

I believe its a dana35 and if you get one that doesnt leak, you are lucky. Id go with the different cover.

Dana 35

They use a plug vs a bolt for the fill plug. As far as whats inside, thats anyones guess without opening up. I've yet to see one that didn't have a bit of build up or leakage around the plug.

All YJ models came with a Dana30 in the front and a Dana35 in the rear.

If a mod is in your future, put a Dana44 from a Grand Cherokee or an Explorer 8.8 in there.

Dana44's from under ZJ Grand Cherokee's actually have aluminum center sections, are really weak and have almost no aftermarket support.

go find a used TJ 44 rear, cut off spring mounts and weld on spring pearches... simple easy and you may find one with your gear ratio.. OR go super 35 with 30 spline shafts, which are fine for running upto 35's...

Or a Dana44 from under an XJ or MJ... The 8.8 would also be a very good choice. For a cheap fix, a Chrysler 8.25 from under an XJ would also suffice, but it would be wise to get the 29 spline version, as the 27(?) isn't much better than a Dana35.
