What is this part I found under my YJ

Just bought my first jeep and the fun has already began. I saw this part hanging over the exhaust pipe. It looks like it came from above the gas tank. I have a 1990 YJ that has a 96 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyclinder in it. It is fuel injected so I am not sure what they would have done with the gas tank and fuel pump. If you recognize this part let me know. Thanks for the help

(EVAP) part? Or a flux capacitor? maybe a gyroscopic synchronization stabilizer?

I had a 96 4.0 Cherokee and don't recall ever seeing that part. Was it actually attached to something or just hanging?

One additional observation, whatever it is, it's a newer part. The metal is shiney, the rubber and plastic look new without damage and very little grime. I would say that part is less than a year old

Rollover valve if you look on top of the tank you will find a hole that it goes in

^ this, there are two on top of the tank, the hoses tee into one that goes to the evap canister under the hood. They allow vapor to vent to the canister to prevent pressure from building in the tank and have a valve in them to prevent fuel from spilling in a rollover. Normally if they fall out, it's because the rubber grommet that holds them in the tank has rotted away. You can get new grommets from a dealership, I think there fairly cheap.

Thanks for the info. I am new to jeeps and the forum. I got the jeep from a 70yr old retired man that in his words "used it to drive to the Dollar General and back" I couldn't find rust or mud any where on it. As long as its running I want worry about it. The part was just stuffed under the body not attached to anything.

unless

Unless something else was done on the top of the tank, you now have an open hole in the top of your fuel tank that is the size of the grommet. Not good. But you should have a gas smell when it warms up outside from off gassing through the opening. Could be dangerous if it is really hot out as there would be enough actual gas vapor to be able to be ignited. Also dangerous in an accident.

Get it back in the gas tank ASAP!
If you have to get gas don't fill your tank above 1/4 tank.
Mine came out due to a bad grommet and gas sloshed out all over, big time fire hazard! When dropped the gas tank to put it back in I used RED RTV to seal both of the tipover valves so it wouldn't happen again.

I had my tank down because of smell but only saw one of those. Found a parts diagram and they did not show any of those that I could see. I'll also say the I have the "T" - one end which was open. Perhaps I'll pull er down again and look a little closer.

I just dropped the tank out of my frame today. In the process of doing a frame and tub replacement. Here is a picture of the top of the tank. You can see the two vents.

I have a 1990 YJ, and when I saw the name of this thread that exact part came to mind. Needless to say when I clicked on the thread and there was a picture of it I couldn't believe my eyes. I didn't think anybody else had one of these. I had NO IDEA what it was, I just keep it tucked up above my shackle.
