Wheel differential or bearings??

Is there any way i can check these things without having to do the extensive job of pulling EVERYTHING apart back there?

I can do the wheel bearings with no hassel, but a guy at autozone said if I wanted to check the wheel differential that I would have a long ordeal on my hands.

What are you opinions and what did you do?
